Default Automatic or manual?

Hi all,

I have a question for you all. I'm having a debate with a friend over what car is worth more, a automatic or a manual. I know this all depends on make and model ect.
Lets say you have the same car with the same mileage and everything but the only difference was one was an auto and the other is a manual. What car would be generally more expensive?
Tbh I didn't think there was much difference between them but would have thought the manual would be slightly more, but my friend says the auto will more expensive?
I know it's a stupid question but want to prove a point, just hope I'm not wrong now!

Certainly the auto in the SLK is the prefered option giving faster times than the manual & 99% go for it. Would not want an Auto in the Cossie though.

correct me if I'm wrong, but usually, when you buy a new car, the automatic is usually more expensive than the manual version

If you went into a Ford dealer and ordered a brand new Focus, you'd pay more if you wanted an Auto......

Therefore, the same would apply to the 2nd hand market, where automatic versions of 'mainstream' cars are rarer and therefore, more expensive. Manual versions are 10 a penny, whereas auto's are rare

don't know if the same applies to 'prestige' brands such as Mercedes, where an automatic gearboxes is deemed 'the norm' for those kinds of brands...

Think about it,

if you passed your test in an automatic car, you can only drive automatics.

you then go to buy your 1st car, which HAS to be an automatic, you'll be trying to find something that rare as hens teeth and once you do find something suitable, you'll be paying over the odds for it..........

how many automatic fiestas/corsas etc are out there (as opposed to manuals)

if you passed your test in a manual car, then this means you can drive both manuals and automatics and trying to find a suitable 1st car will be far far easier

hope that makes sense....

no worries,

but like I said in my 1st post, when you get to prestige brands the opposite might be true, making your 1st thought correct, in part.

EG, if a Mercedes Benz SLS is usually fitted with a semi-auto flappy paddle shift gearbox as standard, but the manual gearbox was an option, the manual version would be rarer and therefore more expensive
(that's if there is a manual version) as it would have had to be a special order

with prestige brands there more likely to have automatic than manual gearboxes......

Yea makes sence. Don't a lot of older autos brake tho? Well more than manuals do? And also the autos being more expensive to fix? There fore making there rep bad and making them cheaper than manuals? Or is my scenario just rubbish? Lol

autos arent more expensive to fix if you look over a long term.
over 100k miles you would probably have 2 clutches(average, not you wonderful perfect drivers) and a gearbox repair. maybe £1000 inc labour.
so your auto does 100k miles no clutches then fails and is repaired for same money.
you pays your money and takes your choice, but for me with traffic getting worse id have the auto everytime.
