I want to strip this and powder coat or paint it ... Is there anything I have to watch out for when opening it up ?

Nothing special to take care of. When you're already there check if the membrane is still intact. Got mine anodised matt black last year.

At most I'd say there will be some kind of diaphragm and spring in there mat

MSD used to have the diaphragms on the shelf Matt. I think they were stocked as 'Group A Diaphragm'
