Swirl flaps are no more likely to fail before or after mapping really.

Worth doing straight away though just cause they are a load of money if they go wrong.

Modern ECU'S do not contain EPROM (i.e. chips) rather they have flash memory, so the only way you would be able to remap is via OBD I would have thought, I think when people say it can't be done, it actually means it can't easily be done.

No doubt BMW like other manufactures encrypt the ECU to stop others tampering with it I should think.

Re the 'Shark fin' thats used for sat nat and maybe the TV as well (Where applicable), it's also used for "BMW Assist" I should think, basically a subscription service where BMW can unlock your car remotely, call the emergency services etc if you have a crash!

Martin

Martin,

It can be done via ODB. It was a good couple of months ago when i last asked if evoultion chips could do it via the OBD.

PMW just got back to me. Ł185 supply and fit the blanking plugs and clean out egr valve and check crankcase breather. Seems reasonable. Think that should be the 1st thing i do

It's a modern version of the lights system BMW have had since the 70's!!!!
They've always been ahead of their time!!if you gave it a tuning the little lights on the dash would disappear one by one, quite quickly sometimes.
Amazing car for what a shitbox high end Corsa or fiesta costs, total no brainer.
Were they about Ł50-60k new???

Not sure if the horror stories are exegerated or not, but does seem a case of better safe than sorry.

Sounds like the ideal first step TBH

Not sure why cars weren't re-called by BMW as they must know the word on the street about the flaps with all the internet stories about them failing.

The only ones Ive personally heard of failing have all been WELL over 100K miles and a fair few years old, so I guess by then its past the recall point.
Also, as its an emission components, it might invalidate the type approval.

Recalls can be a real can of worms.

Get the Dension kit to play off a iPod and you can add Bluetooth to that.

Take a look here:

http://www.incarhandsfree.co.uk/hand...ar-kit-gw51mo2

Bmw do their own version but you lose the cd changer and cant add bluetooth to it. This was you keep the CD changer and can add the bluetooth kit as well.

Fitting is easy and I will do it for you of you get the kit and bring it over to me.

Carlo thanks for helping me out with checking history etc. It is a lovely example. Anyone thinking of a large, luxury, reliable and fast saloon need not look any further than a 5 series BMW diesel. 530 goes very well too

I know the single turbo TD BM's have got a rep of handling a fair amount of miles with ease, but what are the twin turbo cars like as they knock up the miles??

Cheers,

The diva evolution mapped my Ibiza pd 130 and the difference was night and day. A friends BMW 330cD was also done with an egr delete down pipe and top speed limiter removed and that thing is mentally fast for a diesel

Can't imagine what these must go like once mapped and breathing a bit better!! Lovely car mate evo maps are deffo the way forward diesel wise

My good looking brother Chip came round last night to map the BMW. 2 mins is all it took to write to the ecu Difference was noticeable striaght away. More power

Same journey to work this morning saw a 4.5 mpg difference in my favour and once the ecu learns its new parameters i will have more power and even better mpg.

Anyone thinking of mapping their diesel - get it done.

Cheers Chip and cheers Kenny at MSD for the map

Edited to say i also got PMW to do the swirl flap mod. No noticeable difference in power or mpg or anything but piece of mind that the flaps wont fall apart and damage the engine. They seem a good bunch of guys at PMW

Brammer,

Can only advise if you can afford one, then get one. Ive gone from a cossie I never used (once last year) and a Mondeo St TDCi to a 535d. To say I feel like im floating along the road compared to those 2 is an understatement. Really happy with it and with approx 320 bhp and near on 500 ft/lb they are indeed a true weapon of a car

Its a strange quirk with those cars that it takes 40 minutes to read the map off and only 2 minutes to put back on, first time that happens to you it seems a bit strange, lol

Glad to hear you've seen some good economy differences on your regular commute, what were the before and after figures out of interest as im guessing that 4.5mpg is probably heading towards 15%?

Certainly impressive the way it gets down the road now, 275 wide rear tyres scrabbling for grip on a dry road shows how hard its trying

14% better economy on that particular journey then mate

Certainly not to be sniffed at, as thats equivalent saving to fuel being 20p a litre cheaper with current prices of 1.50 a litre!

Im not sure it will improve much from there TBH mate, thats already a pretty good gain realistically, but certainly keep us informed either way
The power tends to take longer to come up than the economy, as the ecu learns its new torque limits etc over a period of time.

good way of looking at it but you have to ammortise the cost of the remap in, or say that after x miles the remap has paid for itself (purely in terms of reduced consumption, but of course the improved power/driveability has some value to) and then you effectively start to get cheaper fuel

HUD and sunroof!! - Its a well specced that is for sure. Looks stunning, I would say that tho... Well done that man!

I bet bottom end and mid range this would give my M5 a good going over.

True enough, im sure its 20K miles before most people break even on the cost of a diesel remap, based on saving a couple of pence a mile or so.
