My new car - It's Mapped :)
#44
Just got off the phone to my local BMW place. Was asking about servicing. I feel like a right numpty now. You dont worry abut servicing until the car tells you it needs it. Condition based servicing they call it. Depends how heavy your right foot is the girl on the phone said. Gone are the yearly or x amount of miles servicing that used to be in place i assume?

VERY nice mate, I wanted to buy one of these last month but the missus thought it was too big for her to drive !! Ended up with a 3 series m coupe!
As people have said above PMW are fine, i've been a friend of their family for years before PMW even existed (he's ex BMW/Merc) and Peter Mould (owner) is a decent chap, although very busy!!

They can be remapped via odb now with an evolutions map rich, was quite a while ago that you asked when they couldnt.
Only pitfall really is potential warranty issues if you have a warranty on it. And obvioulsy if you use the extra power all the time things will wear out quicker, especially tyres, lol
Improves economy on them not just power too, but its the power change that will have you grinning!
They are loopy quick after a remap, well TBH they are pretty nuts as standard!

The gearboxes are about the only weak link in that they cant handle a lot more torque than around the 530lb ft mark on the pre lci cars, ones without a start button.
However as long you drive them sensibly and change the gear oil in them then they even the gearbox is pretty bomb proof.
Mine gets hammered and loves it.
Brakes can be expensive though due to the sheer size of them 348mm fronts and 345mm rears as standard!!!!!!!!!

Cheers Chip dont have a BMW warranty being an 06 plate.
Jeff: Mine has the push button start so does that mean i have a different gearbox?and i cant see a 6 disc changer anywhere in the car. Does this mean i have a decent stereo system just not a 6 disc changer as tbh the quaility of the bass etc is awesome

Hi Rich,
You have the later model which has an uprated gearbox that are good for 700lb ft.
The CD changer should be right at the back of the glovebox if you have one. They are not easy to spot though unless you are actually looking for it there!
The Logic 7 (Harmon Kardon) is the uprated amp and speaker setup that BMW offered and I also have it in mine and I agree that the bass is awesome in them. The only audio upgrade I have done is add the Dension 500 kit so that I listen to the ipod and control it through the I drive which makes life a lot easier.

i have had my 2007 bmw 3 series mapped using evolution chips software ( via chip), over a year ago no problems to report, fuel economy has improved when driving it sensibly. good power also.
the improvements would be even greater with your model
get it done you wont be dissapointed

The evolution chips software really is very good on these cars (ie diesel bmws of that era), I would imagine its one of their most popular maps so they've obviously invested a lot of time and effort in it.

yes took a look at the equaliser as well. That idrive is a wonderful thing. Wonder where my cd changer is unless the cd player in the dash is one of these multi-load types?
Stupid question time. The fin on the roof at ther back is for what? An aerial for radio or for mission control in case i want to fly to the moon?

The factory maps on petrol cars are a lot closer to correct than the diesel ones which get massively handicapped by emisisons laws.
So its a lot easier to get more out of the diesel simply cause they are so poor to begin with.

Depends on who does it but it is mainly on the injection and the timing of the injection that is altered.
The sharks fin is for the Sat Nav and phone, the radio aerial is built into the side and rear window of the car.

Amazing that you can get 50hp and god knows how much extra lb/ft just by altering the timing of the injection. Shows how poor the standard map is because of emmison laws really. I see the new 535d comes with 313bhp and an 8 speed box!

NOx appears a lot at the end of the combustion cycle for diesel, so to avoid NOx's appearing too much they simply dont burn the fuel properly.
MASSIVE OVER SIMPLIFICATION WARNING:
Advance the injector timing, the diesel burns more fully, this means it releases more power per gram of diesel injected, which means for the same amount of fuel you now make more power (performance improvement), and that less fuel is required to make the same amount of power (economy improvement).
Its not that people like Kenny at evolution chips when they are doing their diesel maps know something BMW couldnt have done, its just that BMW werent allowed to.
Im sure its very frustrating for the technicians at BMW having to send cars out the door on what they know is a crap map if you ignore emissions laws!

So basically chippa, boost is barely altered so no need to worry about the turbo's espeically the small one, my gearbox can take approx 700 lb/ft and i get more power and better economy all at once. Cant be bad at all. Where do i sign

Go for it Rich and you wont be disappointed.
When my missus took mine out for the first time she looked down at the speedo on the top of a slip road onto the local dual track and saw 110 and her exact words were
"Oh bloody hell, thats rather naughty"
They are amazing as standard but remapped they are out of this world. People rave about them and for good reason as you have now found out.
The remap will totally change the car again and put it in a totally difrent league!
