Default Need a daily runner

Got a new job that means every now and then I'll need to commute, i.e. a few weeks at a time here and there, so need a super cheap hack to knock about in. Needs to be good on fuel and good on maintenance, dont give a shit what it looks like. Thoughts so far are nissan micra or toyota corolla or similar. Anyone have any suggestions on most reliable motor for not a lot of cash, presume it will be jap to meet the criteria? Were talking sub 1k here

Mk3 golf?

i had one as a work car a few years ago, had a 1.6 petrol i used to run it for £50 a week. bit boring but had a nice heater and a stereo. munched the miles to be fair to it. bought it for £475, stuck 45k on the clock in 2 years and didn't even give it an oil change just 2 tyres and sold it for £300 at the end of that.

polo mk3 cheap on everything and solid as a rock
and you could get a decent one for less than £400

Rover 420d

I've said it before in these type of uber-cheap car threads and I'll say it again. Very reliable and nice to drive for what it is, well equipped and comfortable.

Much, much nicer to drive than little jap cars or old VW's.

Passat (can get them around an R-reg for sub 1k) or Pug 406 diesel. I'd recommend the pug as I don't get one with the seats in the passat

tempted by a VW diesel I think then, shes got a 206 at moment and I hate working on it, french seem to have a funny idea on how to put things together! Polo or golf I reckon, seen Bulletts in for sale section but bit more than I wanted to pay really.
