have we any field or maintenance engineers on PF ??
Thinking of a change of direction with my career currently a diesel technician (mainly trucks etc) but with a back gound in hydraulics and pnuematics due to being chemical specialists and unless driving petrol tanks comes off fancy a new challenge etc.

what type of engineer are you and whats the money like and is there much crossover from a mechanics back ground to yours as really dont know what to start to look and apply for ??

 

im an electrical/electronic/mechanical maintanace engineer in a factor (plus i do projects plc/vision/robotics)
the wage is ok'ish (i think 22k is days money for a normal maint guy)
i really wouldnt know how you would cross over, but i have heard of people doing it! most big companys will say you need an approved apprenticeship

 

very hard to get into it even with qualifcations and apprenticeship these days.18 years experiance and still having trouble getting regular work! I now a few people who have crossed over but that was when things were good.Best to hold tight till the market picks up then make your move.

im an air compressor engineer and earn 33k

 

im a service engineer. 17k basic, and 22kish with overtime (lots)

Your wage is dependent on what and where you work but you are expected to work around 180 days per year, travel worldwide working on oilrigs and land based installations etc on an ad hoc (on call) basis, you'll be looking to earn in the region of £50-80k.
