i dont want to seem negative but my old boss was the dog bollocks of a driver who was used to left hookers as we had a couple on my firm.
he went to canada to drive over there and couldnt pass their hgv test for some reason.
id have a look on line and see what the american CDL test consists of to prepare.
do they have a theory type test over there?

best of luck to you mate, hope it goes well for you.
from what i've heard about some parts of america the test is very very difficult. a lot more involved, not just driveing but maintainance/rapair.

did loads of research into trucking in America, and it seems the easiest way to get out there driving is on a harvest crew on an H2A visa, on that visa, they pay your flight, board and food for the 8 ish months, money not bad either from what i've been told, will know when i've finnished the work, first thing on getting out there is take my CDL(HGV), i believe you have to know mantaince, driving and writen parts, i found an online test for the writen part and past that without studying, its all common sense, just need to know some of the road rules, but i've driven about 10k miles over there on holidays and road trips so most wasn't new to me.

i'm working on the idea, that if i do 8 months work, come back here for 2 weeks, then back out to America for 90 day holiday on a visa wavier, then back here for 2 weeks, before starting 2011 season and have 8 months work again, so basicly living in America but only working on a temp visa each year.
anyone know if i have to pay UK tax on this work, i know the H2A visa is non taxable employment in America but i guess i'll have to tell Mr brown when i get back, i'm sure he will want most of it in UK tax!!!!

Well done for gettin a proper truck driving job, unlike r poxy euro4 crap.
But driving a 600 horse american beast comes with its problems ok if you have a double H, but the super 10 is a bitch to drive.

If you are in the Minneapolis Minnesota area around 18 June check out the Minnesota Street Rod Association Back to the 50s weekend (BTT 50s on the web page). The 2009 show had more than 11,000 cars. The link is below.

i think you'll find the American licence is easier than canada, and with canada you have to give up your british licence and reapply for it when your back in uk, where as with US, you can have both US and UK licences (useful if you get stopped for speeding, show US licence and avoid point!!!)

I can see the HGV being harder to pass here in Canada, due to some of our rugged driving conditions in the winter or in the hot summer months in the remote mountain roads.
It's a different drive for sure.
That being said, it's not hard to pass you air brake test here really. Research, study pass. Nothing can be that hard unless there is a language barrier or an inability to unlearn.
