Default Why did I get stuck, but the 1.0l fiesta didn't??

and no, its not because I am a shit driver

Yesterday, fairly deep snow which gradually turned quite compace, icey! The train staation car park has a gentle slope into it.. bit of speed low gear, revs enough buut not so much to just spin the wheels... then stuck! wouldnt move forward, just spinning.. THEN a little 1 litre fiesta, skinny tyre's just cruises past! How comes?

My tyres have a legal amount of tread, good brang.. Michelin I think (standard type r tyres anyway)

thanks

What car are you driving? A fiesta has less weight, and skinnier tyres are better in snow, as they cut through the snow better down to the tarmac underneath. Have a look at a rally car in snow, their tyres are really skinny!

Skinny tyres cut through the snow better.

Also probably bear more weight per square inch due to their narrowness which would give a little more grip on snow

Also The 'vtech kicking in yo' may well break traction

Standard type R tyres a Bridgestone Potenza's.

My mate used his GF derv saxo, that got everywhere. My evo did as well, but didn't stop nearly as well as the thin tyres.

Just because youre tyres are a good brand and have plenty of life left in them doesnt mean they will be any good in the snow. If they are wide they will be even more useless as said above.

Saying that, if you've got a Type R, havent they got a diff? Should help a bit on snow...

Diffs help a little in the snow, but only if its snow you can "wear out" or get 1 wheel on something grippy, they sometimes hinder on cambers as they make the front end slide.

UK EP3 CTR's don't have LSD's. Older 1s do. And imports do.

my derv mondeo with barely legal tyres on the front has been scary as fuck

all about keeping the revs as low as possible and in the highest gear you can though, ive been doing that and been fine, but seen other folk going nowhere trying to rev their way out of it

You want to try a fwd auto astra on the same snow, with wide tyres, so little weight, going nowhere fast, got stuck on hill end of Scarby seafront, every car without exception just sailed on by, even though I had snow switch on, just had to wear snow down, killing my crap F1's at the same time.

My van has 195/65's on it (I think) and it's been spot on all week. It still AMAZES me the sheer ammount of people that don't know how to / can't drive in snow. See them sitting there trying to get up slopes and they think that burying the throttle will get it up the slope! Then I come along with it in 2nd not even touching the throttle and it just cruises up no problem at all. Or you see them braking in neutral or with the clutch dipped and wondering why they are locking up

you should have see the articulated lorries on the M25, they were wheel spinning up the long hills and just sliding of the road, one i even saw go backwards.

Nice to see out road tax was spent on salt this year
