need to stay above a certain amount of revs ? say 2500 to put charge in a battery
as my battery was dead and i was just letting it tick over and my old man was sayin i need to keep the revs up or it wont charge it

normally when ive jump started a car ive held the revs up to help it out, the quicker the alternator is going the more current induced.

ive always been told , yes , mate . when ticking over the volts is 12ish and when running the car on a journey its nearer 14 ? so it wont charge hardly at all if just sitting on the spot . i aint no mechanic but ive been told this a couple of times . best to jump it and then take it on a ride? pop to Mcdonalds and back in the Galleria 
bet go take that shut the fuck up back and get on my kness loli wouldtake for a spin but iv got no tax so will have to sit there till payday

Plenty of volts at tickover, often seen around 14 on many different cars.
I was told the same however, so don't know if it's the amps or something that could cause it if true.

You should have between 13.5 - 14.5 volts at idle imo.
You shouldn't have to keep the engine running at 2000 rpm for the battery to charge.
If the alternator is only putting out 12v ish at idle (assuming the idle is correct and not too low) i would say something isnt quite right.

Never noticed a difference between idle and fast idle for volts, without loading the electrics up.

not necessarily on a fully charged battery it changes under load off load change the parameters and voltage and amperage changes
