Does a Vauxhall Vivaro weigh more than 2 tonne? Urgent!!!!
Need a definate answer to this please, a friend is in trouble with the police.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks In Advance :top: |
Gross vehicle weight is max 2.9 on the newer ones i think, its as low as 2.7 on some of the older ones though apparently.
Put your post in context? |
Been stopped of a copper speeding, copper said weight of his vehicle is more than 2 tonnes there fore the road has a max speed limit of 50mph for his van, he was hoping it was less than 2 therefore he would have been permitted to do 70.
Thats basically it and by the sounds of it he`s fucked, you sure there over 2 tonnes Chip mate? |
I dont know what weight they refer to, but i would imagine it IS the gross weight, in which case yes he is fucked.
|
Thats bloody tight, on a 70mph road :?
|
According to Whichvan.co.uk the kerbweight is only 1677kgs. If the copper means the gross weight then it is 2700kgs. Was he carrying anything?
Sounds like a copper who did not get it last night!!! Graham |
the police are clamping down on speeding vans aswell as non seat belt wearers aswell
im a driver and drive armour plated vehicles and am limited to 50 even tho u can and 'do' go faster loads of coppers will ignore it but u always get the hero that loves it and middle name is bastard  |
Oh dear. Sounds like a real stickler this old bill.
Anything with a laden weight over 2t is limited to: 50 on a single carriagway 60 on a Mway dual carriagway 70 on a Mway (unless towing) If he is under 2t then its normal limits. if Taz is right above with the weights above, then i would argue that unless the old bill had a portable weigh bridge (bound to have one on Greed-Bay somewhere) in his boot that he needs to prove that your buddy was over 2t. Did he make him drive to the nearest weighbridge? I would get him to get the old bill to prove that he was overloaded... On the flip side though. The highway codes states this "Cars & motorcycles (including car derived vans up to 2 tonnes maximum laden weight)" If the old bill is interpreting that this means an empty wagon under 2t is limited to 50mph because it CAN carry more than 2t then i think he should argue this point for clarification. Hope this helps? Silver |
So whats a std T reg transit come in at

:top: if it is not car derived then it is classed as a commecial veichle, hence 50 on an a road, up to 7,5 tonnes, 7.5tonne plus is 40 on a roads. is the CAR DERIRIVED that is the important factor |
just looked at pic of one, they are not car based and so will be classed as a commercial veichle, hence 50 being his speed limit
|
I think Scott has it "car derived", i was reading it and looking for weight not shape....
Looks like your mate will get the ticket irrespective of what weight he was carrying....oops. Silver |
A Vauxhall Vivaro does NOT weigh more than 2T but can infact carry 2.7T or 2.9T it just depends which model. To carry 2.9T in it is certainly not illegal.

a car derived van is totally different than a panel van ...
even my vito is not classed as a car derived van, although they do the 'v' class what speed was he going ???? because unless the copper was just being a twat or a speed trap they normally ignore it unless your driing like a crazy mofo  although a minibus can do 70 on a dual carriage way .. a van the same size can only do 50 ... so work that one out .... typical government .. had a nice long conversation about it with some of dorsets finest traffic officers  |
same as a hgv can only do 40 on a a road yet a full size coach can do 50
|
Bollox
I got stoped at 85 on rural national speed limit road, wich according to the copper puts me 35mph over the limit, i need it dropped to 25mph so i get a fixed penalty, it was vivaro van unloaded, Or dose it not matter? |

A Transit Connect is over the limit and is a goods vehicle.
A Peugeot partner is a car derived van. The reason a Full size Transit is restricted, but a Torneo minibus version is not, is because the van is able to carry more weight than the mini bus is likely to, and therefore is a greater risk with handling and braking. Using the above as examples its easy to compare to other makes. It's the gross vehicle mass (total weight including max permitted load) that counts, doesn't matter whether it's loaded or not. . |

If passed before you can drive a vehicle upto 7.5t. Vehicles with a MGW of 3.5t or more need to be fitted with a tacho. So the Vivaro loaded can be driven on a normal car licence with no tacho. If the guy wasnt taken to a weighbridge, there is no evidence meaning he has no case to answer to, The only answer required wouyld be "Jog on Copper" ;) |

If it was able to carry over 3.5t GVM then it would need a tacho FACT, and i am near 100% certain a Vivaro isnt available on the market to make 3.5t GVM (unless overloaded of course) |
