Question focus 1.8TDCi DTC code P2339

Has anyone seen this fault or could offer some help?
Car was flying down the motorway until I slowed down to turn on to a side road. The glow plug light started to flash and car went in to limp mode. Managed to get to a friends house where I parked up for the night. Tried to start the next day, light still flashing with just the ignition on. Took a while to start, lots of white smoke and sod all power. Managed to limp to a garage (white smoke stopped once driving) and had fault code P2339 diagnosed. Told it was cylinder 4 fault but trying to get head around fault being present when engine not running...! Have replace knock sensor but fault still wont clear. Various things on web saying it could be all sorts of issues from cam sensor to crank sensor. Injectors may need recoding but dont believe it is the injectors as they were all replaced last year. I have also replaced fuel filter and checked for debris. Gut feeling is electrical but I am no mechanic so any help would be welcome!!

hi there, i have exactly the same problem. would love to know if you get anywhere. i had the injectors recoded this evening and it made no difference. similar to you the light is flashing, you can clear it and the light is still flashing before you even start it. so cant be an injector fault. my mate is a specialist in injectors and said they are very simple only thing that goes wrong is the valve in them. which wouldnt give it an fault code when not running. im thinking ecu but would love to be sure. if i have any luck ill let you know.

Thanks for your reply...I have started to check the ECU also as I have read that the wiring can rub on the bodywork in the foot well and cause issues. Nothing found as yet but is being a bit of a pig to remove from it's location - a bit tight trying to slide it out of it's bracket! I am sure I read somewhere that someone replaced their throttle fly by wire assembly and this cured the problem but just trying to find where I read that. Not sure if that is my problem as when the fault originally started, I was able to drive (to a fashion!), but again, will let you know if I have any success.

need a car for work and my own business so i will have to buy something cheap to keep me going, so not sure when i will get on with it. but if i have any progress i will let you know. my mate looked at one exactly the same about 6 months ago, unfortunately the owner couldnt afford for him to spend much time on it. so he never got to the bottom of it. i think the ecu is located under the battery, theres been some really deep water up here in yorkshire so im thinking maybe water has got in. also my mate said the wiring rubs where it goes into the housing that holds the ecu. might be worth looking there. good luck

Well, the latest in the saga is that the old girl is now up and running (long may it last)!!
Managed to get her running and get her to a local diesel injection specialist. The plan was to check the injector coding but they could not access the PCU. They put me on to another local garage who had the correct Ford software and we hooked her up. Seems that there were no codes at all in the ECU for any of the 4 injectors. We programmed the codes in and we were able to clear the fault - no more flashing light - return of the turbo!!
Has been various stories with re-coding on web- it has worked for some people but not for others so lets just hope I fall in to the first group!!
So to recap......new fuel filter (£20), knock sensor (£25), injectors removed and nozzles put in ultrasonic bath to remove build up (abused company facilities) and finally, recoded all injectors (£60).
Good luck to anyone who has the same fault!!

cheers for the update puddles. my mate tried reprogramming my codes. was showing that it didnt have any of them programmed, so redid them but still no better, but it was being a bit confusing about what order it wanted them in, firing order or cylinder order. might try again. mine sounds identical to yours.

I hope you manage to sort your car out.....I just hope I don't get the return of the coil of death!! Still can't quite get my head around the fault and how it now seems ok just by recoding the injectors, especially as it did not work for you. I have not done anything much more than you other than a new fuel filter, knock sensor (bit of a bitch to get to without a pit)and cleaning the outer surface of the injector nozzles..
Still, if nothing else, I have learnt shit loads about diesel engines
