I'd rather someone did it for me as I don't really have time or a lot of experience on building engines :-/
|
Budget?
|
About 1k. I'll be able to put more towards it if need be :-)
|
Tbh you'll probably struggle with a grand to get someone to build you an engine mate.
But doable if you DIY |
|
So how much for all bits roughly mate if I was to do it myself? Is it easy enough?
|
1k  it'll cost you that for good set of forged rods and pistons!
|
I'm only wanting about 300-350 Bhp mate?
|
You won't need pistons and rods.
I'd say about £400ish for the engine but then you'll need some sort of management to run it. So a grand will prob get you a silly quick 280bhp zetec. Great fun and cheap as. If you were not confident on doing certain jobs (drilling the block or welding etc) then you could always just drop into a local garage or engineering firm and ask them to do it as a little side job. |

I've got some Siemens deka 60lb injectors brand new, and a brand new OFAM ecu I've had about 3 years lol. Bought them to put on my other escort running an efi Rs turbo lump but might use them on a zetec instead if they will work? If not I'll prob get Omex :-)

Whats it going in??? For 1k following the budget build guide (Karlos G's) you will easily make 350-400bhp but i use focus rs inlet and exhaust manifold and turbo personally a good intercooler focus rs i jectors or subaru injectors jobs a gooden
|
Buy st170 engine remove head and sell then fit a blacktop head. Use a 1.8 flywheel and s2 clutch. If you have the other parts ecu, turbo etc then you could do it.

Follow that guide and you'll be laughing Good luck  |
Omex is best but £££ and what you have will work just need it set up correctly

You will get that with that buget build but ??? How long it will last the st170 has forged internalls as standard but they are not great!
If you want to build a zt it will cost more than 1k! £160 2ltr blacktop engine £755 PEC forged pistons and rods £28 thick frs headgasket £50 frs inlet and injector rail £80 frs ex manifold £200+ frs turbo £600 omex600 or better £300 for other bits and bobs then you'll need it mapped |
I'm not bothered about turbos and management etc yet bud just want the lump in and ready at some point :-). If I need better pistons and rods I'll get them, you reckon a good 1200 - 1500 will do me?
|
Yep you also need arp bolts
|
For your budget you could probably buy a focus rs block and head. That's the route I went. There proven to be pretty strong and makes a reasonably straightforward build.
It's all the little bits that add up though. You'll need to sort out a alternator set up for one, and breather set up. Thermostat etc. Building a block and head up is the relatively straight forward bit imo |

The 2ltr blactop engine is and a frs engine all it needs is the frs pistons roughly £255 but you cant get he frs rods anymore so you would need some forged aftermarket jobbies like williams/pec/eagle and the frs head is lightly ported
Yeh I am aware it is simply a blacktop zetec with decent rods and pistons and rurbo oil feed and oil return in place etc. It just makes for a fairly simple diy build was all I was getting at and obviously it's proven. Perhaps I was lucky and managed to.pick a low milage example with matching box up fairly cheap. Quick freshen up and it's ready to drop in! If however you couldn't find a decent one then the st170 bottom end standard blacktop head 1.8mm ford/1.5mm commetic hg would be the route to take without a doubt. Seems a decent way to build for 300hp with many people running similar without to many issues |
I reckon the budget needs upping a bit esp as you need to factor mapping etc.
Also make sure you have the block decked, I didn't and mine is now in bits again to have the block decked as the head gasket let go. There is a lot of little bits that add up when building a zt, plumbing, gaskets, cambelt kits, machine work, adapter plates if used, pulleys, brackets etc etc |

Like I've already said, just follow that guide and you'll have a genuine 280bhp.
Probably spend 2k all in all. But as long as you do it over a few months you'll hardly notice it. Forget all the fancy rods pistons blah blah. Waste of time and money. |
I want that magic 300 Bhp :-) you reckon standard will take that billy?

Forget the "300bhp" number I'm only saying 280bhp as that is the worst case you'll get. Could do 310bhp, but that would just be down to the mapper and boost etc etc. Trust me, that sort of power in an Rs turbo is 100% grin town  |
Yeah it'll take it.
Bloke I know has a 280bhp zvh using the st170 block and it's been going for years now and it gets abuse. |
Haha gdgd :-D so I need scource an st170 lump and a blacktop head and go from there?

fair play mate can't say I've paid much attention to prices since buying mine tbh. The st170 block standard blacktop head seems to be proven just pay heed to stu's coment above regarding getting the block decked And your onto a winner! Bust as said when you get into all the little bits this is where the cost is IME. gaskets pullies adapter plates etc etc it's always gonna end up more than you think for sure |
