i cant knock them i got a stage 2 plus in my 300bhp zetec turbo fiesta and thrash the guts out it and its been fine

Karlos G 04-08-2012 10:53 AM

For the money no they are not worth it... They are essentially just a stock IB5 gearbox (mk5/6 escort, Ka, Focus, etc...) but without the extra case webbing (reduces flex under high torque) fitted with a Quaife LSD and if you pay top dollar a shot peened gear set... Unfortunately this does not stop the shafts snapping
For the same money you can buy 100 low milage IB5 box's and drop your RST LSD

Oranoco 04-08-2012 11:34 AM

I found mine very worth it indeed. The current one lasted very very well. Mine is the lesser box so has the standard LSD that's pumped up a bit. Before this box I'd gone through 12 others.

Karl 04-08-2012 11:44 AM

In terms of B5/IB5's they are without doubt the best gearbox you can buy for an RS Turbo. We only recommend CTS for IB5 boxes, and they are worth every penny!

However fundamentally the IB5 is'nt all that strong, so you have to put things in perspective. Ideally we say they are great up to 250bhp, over that Im affraid its a bit of a lottery, some last at 300bhp, some dont. That in no way reflects a fault on CTS's behalf, simply that the box is'nt really strong enough for 300bhp no matter how you modify it!

So the answer is, if you're below 250bhp its a fantastic box.

jaiscossie 04-08-2012 12:37 PM

Were no good on my s2 which broke a stage 2 box 3 times, got fed up in the end and was just putting recon ib5 boxes in at £80 a go. If you have a big power s2 save your money up for a frs box conversion, then forget about it. Are you zvh or zetec?

Karlos G 04-08-2012 01:48 PM

£1500 and they don't outlast a stock IB5 which can be picked up for £30 with 36k miles on (picked up a few around this price and milage) it's just not worth it IMO, if you want the Quaife LSD then buy one for £600 and drop it in, still less than half price :king:

no mate, I should only be running around 2oobhp on cvh after the build, just wanted a good box to fit while the engine and box is out so that Im only fitting it once, cheers

is their much diffrence between the ib5 and turbo box mate

Karlos G 05-08-2012 06:35 PM

Bigger bearings, stronger casing (more webbing), self centering neutral, but no LSD.

are all ib5 boxes the same m8

RSricRS 05-08-2012 06:41 PM

IMO there a great gearbox I have the stage 2+ and running 210bhp - 230torque and it loves it!!! Have the BnM shifter also, bang through the gears like no tomorrow, grips in second and pulls like a bastard.

Ginge ! 05-08-2012 06:42 PM

Are they , some have dual synchro and later ones have smaller selector forks and different 5th gear casing with larger drilled oil galley,,, how is that the same ?

It's Czech Mate 05-08-2012 07:11 PM

Surely gearboxes are rated in torque and not power?

botters 05-08-2012 07:29 PM

ginge, he was asking if they were the same not stating that they are

I've always thought this as well. Surely a maximum torque rating would make more sense.

Mark RS 05-08-2012 07:43 PM

Shame there customer service is shit and they don't believe in phoning customers back.

rs cab 10-08-2012 09:56 PM

Will the rst LSD fit straight into the ib5?

I dont think they are 'rated' to anything as such? But yes torque is what will kill them.

Yes it fits, you need to grind a fraction (maybe 1mm) off the outside for the IB5 crown wheel to fit.

Yeah you always hear people saying things like "good for 250bhp" etc when as you said its the torque that will kill them.

rs cab 11-08-2012 02:46 PM

Cheers for that Karlos, think i`ll get myself one of them box`s so.:top:

Karlos G 11-08-2012 03:41 PM

No worries mate, just a much cheaper option than the CTS with very little difference.

milesy23rst 11-08-2012 04:36 PM

What ib5 boxes fit i presume escort, fiesta, but what else? as mine is whining in 1st gear and clutch starting to slip so going to change gearbox when i do clutch i also still have the crap abs will this make a difference when i have fitted gearbox to refit all the abs bits etc??

studabear 11-08-2012 06:13 PM

Ideal time to lose the abs really.

emc-rst 15-08-2012 04:58 PM

is there any modifications you need to make to the ib5 to fit

emc-rst 02-09-2012 07:58 PM

is their any modifications to make the ib5 fit or is it a straight swap

gup 03-09-2012 10:41 PM

Are the ib5 gears any stronger than a s2 box
