Top end knocking sound

I get what i think/hope is not a knock as i let off the throttle from the top of my cvh, any ideas what it could be? The head has only done about 3k and the cam was fitted as a kit about 1500miles ago and run in properly.

Christian and Beccy 02-04-2008 04:40 PM

Kent cam kit??

S2Steve 02-04-2008 04:51 PM

Yep. cvh35

Christian and Beccy 02-04-2008 04:53 PM

As much as I am loathed to say it, it's had a lobe or two for lunch. :(

Christian and Beccy 02-04-2008 04:54 PM

I think Kent expect you to change your cam each time you fill up with fuel. They should paint it yellow and call it a service item.

Piper cams for CVH aren't much better.

Newman are the best of whats available. Take that as words of experience, I have been through all this.

S2Steve 02-04-2008 04:58 PM

SO its lasted about 1500 miles, does it not have a guarantee at all? It still goes like stink though and drives perfectly...

Christian and Beccy 02-04-2008 04:59 PM

I might be wrong about it, but I have had one go within 500 miles and know of 3 others that did the same around the same time that were unrelated to us.

S2Steve 02-04-2008 05:01 PM

Any other symptoms i can look out for?

Christian and Beccy 02-04-2008 05:04 PM

Not really. Rocker cover off, whip the lifters out and take a look is the best bet. ;)

juffer 02-04-2008 08:27 PM

if it was cam or followers it would tap all the time! does it knock as you accelerate aswell?
juff

Christian and Beccy 02-04-2008 10:08 PM

Not necessarily, it would tap less as oil pressure increases, and more as oil pressure decreases (like when you lift the throttle) ;)

well thats a good bit of advice! was looking at kent and piper, think i will go for newman now! which cam kit should i get though im really confused by all the numbers and lift and spec! im building engine so but its just normal build nothing wild, head work propbably but on standard turbo.

Newman only do one off-the-shelf CVH cam and thats ideal for you. It is solid lifter though, so 10 times more difficult to fit and set up than a normal cam, but with very little chance of problems.

Mine taps at idle, and if i raise the revs the tapping noise goes away. Any idea what this would be?

S2Steve 03-04-2008 11:25 AM

To be honest mine doesn't do it all the time. Its mainly when cold and idling, after that its fine but a little noisey at warm idle, but aren't all cvh's

You sound like you're trying to convince yourself that there isn't a problem!! Maybe there isn't. Get out there and have a look, it's really not that hard a job. ;)

haha yeah i am! Its cuz i spent all my money getting it rebuilt and can't afford to do it all again! I also would not know what i'm doing taking it apart and setting it back up again

Turbocabbie 03-04-2008 05:18 PM

mine make no noise... no idea what the cam is but it was put in by Tony from Turbosystems
