Escos side skirt clips
Guys,
has anyone ever looked into getting the plastic side skirt clips remade by another company as Ford no longer stock the front ones. Basically I have seen a lot of threads where people have asked if they are still avail etc. Im not looking at earning cash from this just thought that it would be handy having a good stock as more and more people are doing underbody restorations. if anyone is interested let me know and Ill get the wheels in motion. Not a bad idea but you would need to sell a hell of a lot to recoup the cost of a mould tool.

I have been looking on the net and there are several plastic companies that will take the work on... all i need is a couple of pictures of the clips to sort of wet the appetite of the companies. Also if anyone has a spare front and rear that they could give me for a mould to be created that would be fantastic...dont fancy pulling one off my car ( I will even return it if still usuable and if it happens ill even give them a free set of clips )....and no its not a cheeky way of me getting a free set of clips lol
|
Would be worth it if you could get it done at the right price.

I've been making plastic injection mould tools for the last 23 years
If you could get a new front and a new rear clip to me I could get you a quote, possibly for cash to keep the cost down. We also have the injection moulding machines at work so producing them would not be a problem. Does any one have some high res clear pics of the clips up close ? cheers Mark |
Mark that sounds like a good idea mate.. someone must have a clip to show..

Paul Ripley has a full set but would probably not want to lose one if he supplied it (just in case they couldn't be made)
Give him a PM I am sure he will be happy to help out :top: |
I know Paul and have bought a car off him in the past as well as a mint EsCos centre console, I'm fairly sure he would trust me with a couple of clips. I would need a scrap/broken clip also to see what sort of plastic it made from, the only easy way to tell is to burn a corner of the moulding with a lighter and sniff the smoke  my boss is very good at this but who knows what it does to your health!
A lot depends on what the moulding looks like, my car is jammed in the garage with no real way of getting to the clips for a while yet and detailed high res pics would be a big help. If the mould tool requires "up and aways" or "sliding blocks" it gets far more involved and the cost goes up. DMS make standard mould bases and I guess you are looking at around £600+vat for the basic materials then labour to make the electrodes, spark erosion, ejection etc, etc. http://www.dms-diemould.co.uk/ Even on the cheap you would be looking at least £1500 for a mould tool (assuming no sliding blocks or up and aways). You would need to sell 100 sets of mouldings at around £18 a set to break even after moulding costs. How much demand is there for these? EDIT there is another way but it involves me making a set of inserts in my own time and bodging them into an old mould tool. I really don't want to waste a whole load of valuable spare time doing this, getting them moulded only to find that 5 people in the whole of Britain want a set at say £18 a go to find that I've worked for 20 pence an hour for 40+ hours. Mark |
if they were remade you could sell them for £50 + no prob!!
specially in a few years when the escort starts to get restored in big numbers. I do have a pack of new clips but I don't know if there front/back or both! steve |
They will sell like hot cakes, i would def take a few sets
|
I'd have a set off you if the money was right.
|
I definately interested in this little venture... i know this may sound dumb but do you think these clips are patented and by reproducing i could be for the big shaft.. anyone know how i go about looking into this?
|

i bought about 40 of these clips a couple of months back :top:from fords but they are only the back ones. They still have the rears listed as available but the fronts have gone obsolete. i will try and take a picture later.
|
Guys its the fronts you can get from Ford and not the rears!
I have 20 odd new rears ones that I would like to put on ebay before anyone starts remaking them sorry guys but I'm sure you would do the same! I've got two kids and a bufty fetish to feed   Also just so you know the Cosworthshop kit on ebay DO NOT include the rear clips and two people I know that have bought them have found out |

There the front ones mate, the rears are two each side and go under the rear quarters but the fronts do the job ok.

I got the clips from Paul via Ebay and they are little bastards to accurately measure so I asked a guy we deal with at work if he could get me some sizes on his optical coordinate measuring machine, I was expecting a sketch with some sizes but he modelled the whole thing in SolidWorks for me . He must have spent hours on end doing this just as a favour
I have made an EXE file that has an imbedded viewer and uploaded it to my webspace so anyone can have a look at the 3D model. http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/rs2300/Trim%20Clip.exe It needs a couple of small tweeks but is almost spot on :DD: Big thanks to Peter Niel at AML http://www.admould.co.uk/ Edit, don't worry about the EXE file, it's 100% safe and a way that SolidWorks uses to export files. (if you're a Pikey running Windows 98 it might get the hump!) Mark |
ok here's one for you i have lots of rear ones! but the ''SO CALLED'' front ones wont fit on the front of my skirts?????? and the rears wont fit on the rears???
WTF is it all about |
