Escy - Yeah that Gti is stunning also, but must say, I'd be well miffed if I was the highest bidder on it, then this Rallye came up!
The guy that is selling the Gti has just bought a show winning RS1600i

The VW Rallye is arguably the ultimate incarnation of the original and still unbeaten GTI.
The VW Rallye has permanent 4 wheel drive, Power assisted steering, ABS and is powered by the G60 (G-Lader Supercharger) powerplant, producing in standard form 160Bhp - as in the VW Golf GTI G60 (2 wheel drive only and wasn't available in the UK) and the Corrado G60. With the larger engine bay available in the Golf, the Rallye has a larger intercooler than the Corrado which when tuning allows the Rallye to produce slightly more power - in excess of 210Bhp (Smaller pulley, CAM and re-mapping of the ECU - see the Technical Section for more details).
Only 5,000 were made between 1989 and 1990 (G and H plates) and all were left hand drive - in order for the Rallye to qualify for group homogolation, approximately 39 were original UK vehicles - although there are now many more than this in the UK - mainly personnel imports.
Based on a MKII shell - but structurally much stronger and more rigid. The bodyshell was in two door only with it's distinctive box arches giving away it's Rally heritage. Most had sunroofs - but there are a few around with out - thought to be originally destined for motorsport. The interior trim varies widely, some have half leather, some full, some have electric windows, some have electric mirrors. There are a very few that have Aircon (at time of writing we are aware of two in the UK)
Overall a very well built solid car, handles very well (body roll with the standard suspension - see the Technical Section for Suspension choices) - and stops well thanks to the large front discs (same size as fiited to the VR6 - 280mm). Perhaps a little under powered in standard form - due to the extra weight of the bodyshell (275kgs more than a mkII 16v) and the 4 wheel drive system, but tuning is relatively easy and cheap, (again see the Technical Section) 180Bhp and over gives the Car a much better power to weight ratio.
Really it's biggest weak point is the G-Lader Supercharger, this should be examined after about 40,000 miles - (again see the Technical Section) if this is neglected and the Supercharger goes into self-destruct mode it will be "bye-bye" Supercharger/Engine and "Hello" Mr Bank Manager
In 1989, Volkswagen took the Synchro four-wheel-drive system and attached it to a heavily revised and supercharged 1763cc engine to create the Rallye Golf. A compression ratio of 8:1 and maximum supercharged boost pressure of 0.65 bar, meant that the engine produced 160 bhp at 5600 rpm. It was controlled by a Digifant electronic injection and the 5 speed gearbox (02A) taken from the Passat. The suspension was uprated and stronger anti-roll bars were fitted. Wheels were 6Jx15" Sebring Alloys, using 205/50VR-15 tyres. As an option 6˝"J x 15" BBS RM Split Rims were available . It took 8.6 seconds to reach 100Km/h, and had a top speed of 209Km/h
VW decided, rather bravely to go down the Supercharged route rather than using a turbocharger, which was favoured at the time by other manufacturers. The Supercharger was driven directly from the engine by a ribbed belt. The supercharger mechanically pressurised the incoming engine air, before it passed through an air cooler and into the engine. Volkswagens Supercharger also known as the G-Lader because of its internal resemble to the letter G. The Rallye is commonly referred to as having a G60 engine, which is a term for the G-Lader and its 60mm air intake. Volkswagen justification for using a Supercharger as opposed to using a Turbocharger, was because of its low speed torque, and minimal throttle lag. Volkswagen claimed that full pressure was available within a 0.8 of a second. Anyone who has driven a Turbocharged from this era will know the problems associated with Turbo lag at low engine revs.
Unfortunately for the Rallye Golf, the FIA ruled that its supercharger intake had to restricted, so the long term prospects for Volkswagen's first official motorsport Rallye were basically killed off in a instance. As a result the Rallye was never officially raced.
Luckily for us owners, in order for VW Motorsport to race the Rallye, they had to build 5000 road going Rallyes for Rally Sport Homologation purposes. All were hand made in Belgium in 1989 but registered on different dates. Based on the 3-Door Mark 2 Golf, the Rallye Golf is identified by its distinctive wide arched reinforced shell, rectangular headlamps and a three-bar grille. All were Left Hand Drive (even the 70 Rallyes officially imported into the UK by VW). They came with Electronically Controlled ABS, Power Steering, 4 Wheel Drive, a Supercharged 160bhp G60 engine and a half leather interior. Options included the half leather electric Recaro's, electric windows, electric mirrors, heated mirrors, central locking etc. Rallyes were available only in 5 colours (Tornado Red, Black, Graphite Metallic, Blue Pearl Metallic and Green Pearl Metallic). The latter three colours were exclusive to the Rallye and will not be seen on any factory model.
My Rallye is currently putting out 212bhp
