rather than pay someone to do it, i think you will find that if you go down the scrappy, look out for a 1.6 cvh mk5 escort. some of these(i cant remember which model?) had power steering fitted. my brother inlaw once fitted it all to his old rst..... so i know it goes on!!!!!!!happy hunting

Hi there mate, have been thinking about converting my EST to power steering to!
I have seen a MK4 Escort cabby in the local Ford scrappers and this has some kind of conversion done. As far as i can make out, it looks as though they have just used a Mk5 power steering rack and made up some brackets to make it fit the MK4 shell. I know some of the Mk5 Escorts still used the 1600 CVH and i have seen them with power steering. The pump fixes on the top left side of the engine near the cam belt cover and the fluid resovoir sits next to the header tank. Apart from a couple of braded black pipes wit banjos on the end thats about all i could see the system has. Janno at odd kid said he used three different parts of racks for his conversions?? Ive also heard of some sort of Rover metro rack being used, but not sure? Think im gonna have a go with the MK5 escort setup and suck it and see!

I have done the conversion a few times for customers, imo not worth while doing.

Its more than just taking parts off another car! As if its as easy as that

Think about what you are trying to do when using powersteering..
The Rack from a Mk5 fits onto the crossmember which bolts to the underneath of the car. Where exactly would you bolt this to on a Mk3/4 I use a different rack and also have to mod the bulkhead to be able to fit any type of system..

i didnt say it would be easy. You might not find it worth while mate, but some people think fitting cossie management is pointless!!!!!Everyone has different opinions, want different things which i am very happy to see as everyone seems to copy everyone else these days and that dont always bring results. There will be some head scratchin, like i said i didnt say it will be easy but it HAS been done. It will be worth the agro if thats what you really want seand.good luck son

Corsa electric power steering motor can be modded to fit the steering column You lose a little of the underside plastic trim in the car and for this reason we chose not to go mainstream with it.

The bufty's went mad It would be okay for a track car though

They are fitted to a variety of vehicles now including Mk1 and Mk2 escorts.
Seen prices vary from Ł400 to well over Ł1000 for the mod.

Dude... All i ever do is offer new ways and methods! Always bringing new results!

However i done the powersteering conversion 5 years ago, i have done others since the first one!

Its pointless and is more work than its worth! Do you honestly think making a car which suffers from Tourque steer and also has the worst designed roll bar and handling setup any better with power steering

If you fit a S1 rollbar or 16i etc.. And then lower the engine in the engine bay. Use 3 piece driveshaft setup. Oversize tie bars and clamps, Coilovers, Adjustable TCA's, Steering rack heightening brackets, + a few other trick stuff on offer.

THEN use powersteering, the setup will work and be worth it!

But how many cars do you know that has all that!

Regards

wot you torque-ing about,

new cars have power steering, juss sell your rs and get one of them instead if its too much to handle, everyone gets pissed off about it sometimes, sounds like a big shift for small gains to me,dont remove the tourque steer,it belongs to the car.

I agree that torque steer is a charicteristic of the RS but i must admit i would rather go in a streight line than through a hedge bottom!

dunno bout everyone else but i feel cars with Power Steering are far too floaty!

The only benefit is parking but you can't say you bought an RS Turbo to do the shopping run!

aye ok my arms twisted, maybe we should have one of those dave inflating pilots like on AEROPLANE the movie,he could just park the thing and then deflate till the next time.

(er ,,not in a butch man sitting next to me type of way, like, im not swinging that way, youll get my drift if you see the film! would be a bummer if he got a puncture tho! )
