Default oil temperature question

i have recently fitted an oil temp gauge and i was wondering what normal operating temp should be?

it looks to sit around 120oC at the moment

also how hot is too hot for the oil?

Eeeeeeeek.... Far too hot for "Normal" operating, especially this time of yeah. You start sticking your foot down and you be easily seeing 130+

Depends on the car 80 - 100 roughly.

What oil you using?

You sure the gauge is connected and plumbed in right? That is VERY hot.

why would your oil be so hot under normal conditons??

what type of gauge is it??

At National Day in Donnington last August my oil temp was up to 125C at the end of each session. But that was after 15/20 mins of balls to the wall driving.I'd be worried if mine got as hot as your's from just driving on the street. Is the sender unit matched to the guage,as 120C is very hot for the conditions??Regards Micky

if anything the oil will be cooler after its been returned to the sump...

if these readings are correct, you have something very wrong with your engine

Agree with above. I don't think your oil temps are actually that high at all, but of course it is hard to be 100% sure while sitting in my bedroom watching Predator. I think the gauge is making you scared, and rightly so.

ok ive just been back out in the car and after a bit of abuse the highest temp i saw on the gauge was 105oC (made sure i didn't read the gauge from side on this time!)

to be honest its only a cheap (second hand ) gauge ~£20 so im hoping that it must be a few degrees out.

the only reason i have it is to see when the car has warmed up to operating temp i don't need specific temps really.

maybe i should just buy some decent gauges! lol

Mine hasn't passed 90°C since about October.

Most of the time its around 80°C.

120°C on track and I start worrying!!

I would expect to see that on track but on a run to the supermarket would be excessive. Should be 70-80 this time of year.

Cheers

i am worried in the back of my mind that there is something wrong

what could cause oil to be excessively hot?

i want to blame it on a dodgy reading from my second hand gauge. I mean aparently the oil is 50oC when i start the car up in the morning.

Think i may just remove it to stop me worrying

I drove my car 17 miles last weekend and it didn't get above 65! It was 2*C outside though and had no boost to play with
