i just finished work got in my cossie. Had it running .nudge the wheel with my keen heard a pis-st like gas escaping. With this smoke but no burning smell. came from the steering column. scared the crap out of me. She a J reg sapphire 4x4. Got en he ideas what it my have been thanks

 

Steam escaping from somewhere, ie. the heater matrix has a leak/loose pipe??

 

I take it she's not got airbags being a J plate?

Does the horn still work? wires could have fizzled?

Can't see how the matrix leaking would let steam into the steering column?!

 

Thought about airbags but didn't think any Sierras had them??

 

most proberly the ignition wires(part of the loom) in the steering cowling have touched so worth having a look b4 major damage is caused!

sierra DID'NT come standard with air bags. and steam COULDN'T have been!

 

I had that once, it was the Light Stalk shorting out and then tryin to burn a
fuse in the fuse box !!! .

Then i found out it was a loose wire from a guage causing the short,but some
how affecting the light stalk !!!

Had this before on an old chavalier and on my mates rs2000.
Its the ignition switch on the back of the barrel. They get full of dust and shit and eventually it burns.

 

dust + grease gives off a really white type of smoke aswell, like a really pure thick white smoke.

Could well be the plug like everyone is suggesting

 

just been out there. Took the steering housing off. clean as a wassail, Beats me what it was. The heater is working and the light and horn are too. i don`t think i have a air bag as they are fitted in the wheel it self? WOuldnt be stem if engine was cold

Check all fuses, but if it was me I would have the batery disconnected quick

 

Checked all the fuses and box. All OK just don`t know were it come from. There is nothing there what is under presser eg airbag as i don`t have one. don`t under stand it every thing is working OK . Just like to know what it was
