i'm a complete novice at this but looking to get into it as my new years resolution type thing! just wondering what sort of clubs i should be buying as a starter.

my best advice to you is get yourself along to a reconised pga pro shop
get the best advice u can, spend as much as u can afford cos belive me quality does help in golf ,get fitted for the clubs as clubs do need custom fitting and get out and practise.............
this can take over your life mate just like fast cars
dont buy cheap off the web beware of fakes on net
get pga advice they do know what the best eqiupment for u is,,
you wouldnt take your car to halfords for a tune would u cos they r crap so dont buy cheap off internet and expect to play well

im a 12 handicap player Matt. I play regular. My advice is buy good second hand clubs NOT cheap starter ones..

Go on ebay and look for some Ping Eye 2 irons. You can buy 3-SW irons in good condtion for around 170-200. i sold a set in spring for 110 but needed re gripping. I have now got ping G2's. I cannot recommend the ping eye's enough. Make sure you get regular flex STEEL shafts too.

As for woods. Dont bother with a big driver until you start hitting the ball good. Go for a good 3 wood for off the tee and a nice small headed fairway wood as long irons are very hard to hit when you begin.

As Matt says, get some lessons as SOON as you start. They are worth it. It is much easier to learn you to swing right now, then to iron out problems that have become a habit....that is from experience

Regular Flex STEEL shafts. Not any graphite at all mate they are toss. I only use graphite on my woods...

oddyssey half moon white steel putter
Ping g2 irons 3-Sw!

I need a wedge between the pitching wedge and the sand wedge as the gap in degree is too much. But i want that buying for me

 

Not sure I agree with the "good secondhand clubs" theory.

When I started playing 15 years ago, I needed all the money I had on lessons and developing technique.

A point proved when my local pro can hit the ball just as well with my new and old set............ and my old set is OLD!

Buy a recognised make IMO and get something that will fit you - nothing worse than people buying the wrong club, and then thinking they have to adjust their game to suit, when they should have just bought the right set in the first place.

You say your old set is OLD...but what are they? Are they nickasanichomobonickwankshits or are they a reputable make I have never seen a wank club last to become a good old club?

I would rather spend 200 quid on good used pings that 100 quid on shit cos they are new and until he actually knows he wants to play and enjoys it there is no point buying stuff such as mine or better.
If he bought ping and found he didnt like it, he could sell the pings for the same he paid... as they hold good value! Hed after chuch the cheapos in the lake

 

And all clubs need to be altered to suit your swing plane and posture anyways.....

your right about me not knowing whether i like it or not yet! only started yesterday! and talking of old clubs - we have a set in the garage which havent been used since the war!

they look good - but what else is needed to play a full round? a putter and driver, etc?

btw im only planning on going down the driving range and maybe getting a few lessons there. probably be months before i try and do a few holes!

 

thats the best way Matt..driving range. As much as a round is nice, if ya cant play it can be a bit degrading especially when folk are wanting you to play on as your holding em all up behind

You need as said, irons 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,pitching wedge, sand wedge, putter, a 3 wood and a fairway wood to start. And a bag A glove, and some balls....LOTS but not for range obviously

Enjoy it mate i love it...probably the reason i dont have much interest in cars now as spare time when weather is fine i play golf!

and definitely need a glove - just been doing some chipping in the garden and getting a big blister already!

cant wait to get into it. have an inkling i might be ok at it and my bosses are always chatting about it when they come in on a monday morning! need to get in there as read somewhere 50% of business is done out on the course!

 

lol. The glove is for the left hand if your a right handed golfer and isnt to stop blisters . It is to aid grip with the left hand without the need to squeeze, as when you squeeze your arm muscles also tighten up and ya dont want tight arms...a nice relaxed feeling is needed. The right hand is only placed on and again needs to be relaxed.

 

oh and PW is pitching wedge and SW sand wedge. LW is lob wedge but i dont use one..

but as said the clubs are over 50 years old and grips are fooked!

it'll not take you long to get to my standard cos im crap lol have only kept under 100 once i only got into it 2 years back and have not played for the last yr! only been to driving range a few times instead.

Matt T zoids are a decent starter club IF you get em for a good price. They are no longer available new and came down to about 170 for a full set of irons 3-SW in the summer. So yoi want em for a god price, say 100 quid or id stick with finding some ping...as i said before they hold good value!

I've been playing for over ten years, currently off ten but I did play of 9 for a few years before the demons struck.

My advice would be to get a decent second hand set on the recommendation of someone who knows what they are talking about and that you trust. PGA Pros don't always offer the best advice for the buyer, if you know what I mean.

Jobbo off here is a very good player, low single figures, he works in golf too, so he might be able to sort you out with a good deal.

Also lessons are an absolute must, perhaps 4-6 to start off with just to get you going.

My final tip before you start playing, is learn to chip and putt golf is a game best taught from short to long, unfortunately it always seems to be taught the other way round!
