My old turbo used to do that....and that was shagged! Mine whistled like that for ages but still produced the boost ok, when i took it off to replace it tho there was more play in the shaft than u could shake a stick at! So i'd say it's probably past its best mate!

A whistling turbo points to an out of balance turbo, which means its on its way out.

As far as I know mate, a turbo only whistle's when it is out of balance. The louder the whistle the worse the balance. Im no expert, and someone may be able to shed a bit more light on it.

My Turbo Derv that I have whistles, but then again, it's pretty fooked! lol

"Turbocharger whine is often caused by excessive bearing wear. What generally happens is that the bearings wear allowing the impellers to rub against the compressor housing of the Turbocharger. This causes the whistling during acceleration. This is not to say that all Turbochargers that whistle need to be replaced. Some Turbochargers whistle for years without failure. Frequent oil changes will help prevent Turbocharger failure!"
