Default Starter motor

Can anyone tell me how many and what colour the wires are that go to the starter motor, I have 4 terminals but can only see 3 wires, the main red one, the main black one and one black/red wire

Ok

you have 3 wires, one is the big ass red from the battery, another red which is actually made of two thinner wires, theyre the main charging lead, these both get put on the same terminal, they should only fit on one, and are secured with a 13mm nut, and the solenoid energiser wire will be black & Red. or black & blue or black & yellow (i forget which), now this wire can have a few different connections, some are ring terminals, some are female spades, what is on your loom and what spare connectors are on the starter? A pic of the motor would be handy.

The red/black wire was burnt and crispy with no connector so it must go to the male spade on the solenoid. I've connected up the red wires and the black wire but it looks like I have one spare terminal a sort of round thin terminal, is this a spare???

There are only 2 used terminals on the RST starter.

Why have you got a black wire on the starter? The black battery cable should be bolted to the bell housing.

You should have a red battery cable to the starter and then a smaller red pair on the same terminal going to the alternator. Then the black/red smaller wire goes on the spade terminal.

If you fit them on wrong you could do damage to the starter and/or the wiring harness in the car....

aldy Yeah thats all good, crimp a new BLUE spade on the end and connect it up and you should be running

DazC : The black wire he means is a Black with red stripe, the solenoid energiser wire.

I know what your saying though, earth bolted on the starter that would be deadly lol

Thanks guys I'll take off the black wire, where abouts does it bolt on the bellhousing???. Thats the trouble when you didn't strip it apart but its nearly there now, its nearly a finished project not an unfinished one as it was when I bought it

Usually the main engine to battery earth goes onto the front bell housing bolt at the very top (there is 2 at the top and it's the front one). It's actually amazing you have managed to stretch it down that far to the starter!!

If you can get pictures of it then we might be able to explain a bit better.
