That reminds me of the Solberg crash in Germany last year - i think thats when it was anyway - when he rolled it into the verticle concrete slabs at the side of the road.

I still can't grasp the idea how a rollcage can fold like that.

I know but I always thought (spelling???) that rollcages could take impacts like that and this one just folded like mad.

The co-driver is VERY VERY lucky to be still alive as it's totally crushed onto the seat.

That's what I don't understand. How it could fold like that.

You don't see the point though - the roll cage protected the cockpit as a whole with what we could say were "minor" mis-shapes compared to what the same cockpit without a cage would have been like (i dread to think ) . The reason the pariticular section of the roll cage bends so "easily" is the force acting (from one of the concrete bollards hitting the roof) over the small cross-sectional area of the tube (its only a hollow cylinder of metal) - Yes the material is very strong, but theres no way it could withstand the immense force of the car (travelling at god knows how many MPH) hitting the concrete over an area as small as 10cm^2.

in simple terms, its a roll cage, not an impact cage, hit a certain object in the right place and watch the cage fail.

just goes to show how even a full cage can easily go wrong

Reason being as you and all passengers would require to wear a helmet all the time if a cage was fitted, without a helmet a roll-cage aint so much of a safety device anymore once your skull cracks off it
