Default Standard Gearbox...?

just a quick question. what is the standard gearbox upto power wise?

ive just had my car chipped and its still on the standard gearbox.

if its likely to die then i would rather replace is sooner rather than later.

im running 175bhp 191lb/ft.

also what about the standard clutch? i think it may have started slipping recently but i can't really comfirm that until i fix the leaking oil from my rocker cover...

thanks!

mine was on standard box and clutch for a few yrs at 197bhp... was fine. then the box blew and i bought to many shitty 2nd hand ones (bad choice). tbh its worth considering a bernie box if ya can or a refurb from fords. but saying that this standard box touch wood is still ok 6mths on and i have an organic clutch

Depends how hard the car is driven?

Eventually it's bound to break. Wouldn't have thought it will be too bad for exploding at that power level. If it does go bang get one of Bernie's gearboxes

car isn't driven too hard.

will have to see when i next drive it. like i said i could have got some oil on it causing it to slip cause it wasn't slipping on the rollers or on the drive home.

I beleive with the RST box it's usually the layshaft and/or it's bearing that fail.

Recon boxes vary dramaticaly. I wiped one out in 7 hours and the company refused to sort it as the car was modded. Shortly after the next box went in it was sent to a rolling road road where it made 119bhp

Wankers

So to deal with that problem is to fit bigger bearings right?
What is the layshaft and where is it located in the box, is there a better one you can fit?

Nothing wrong with the shaft, but the bearing at the end of it should be uprated. The IB5 bearing can be installed with minimal machining to the casing.
