Default suspec piston rings gone, its alot more.

well, i thought i had blown piston rings on my turbo, oh how wrong was i, pull the piston out today as the compression was well down on the bore. and found this.

so know a cheap fix is going to turn into an expensive fix i knew there was a reason not to own a turbo again.

can any one help me on where i can get one piston from, low comp one prefered, but standard is ok, as i can get it all machine to the right spec.

and this piston is a AE one, and only 3500 miles old, so not sure if its a dodge piston, or just a crap make?? or just my cars not running right at all.

I had the same problem with my Mahle Pistons. 3 out of 4 were like yours. Found it was down to detonation in the end. You need to check your timing and compression ratio You head might have been skimmed too much causing the compression to be too high.

once its all fixed, it will be on the rolling road for sure, the timing may well have been wrong, as it was fixed only a tyear ago, maybe it was out. i brought the car with the broken engine, so i dont know how long it had been like this.
cheers for the advice, i will defo get it all checked out

That isn't a melted piston. It's not got hot. It's due to excess compression pressure, usually det.

Just cos it was on a rolling road doesn't mean the operator knew his arse
from his elbow.
I've five (count them) 5 engines just like yours,in my basement that
were set up by the various 'experts' around the rather large city I live in.
2 things seem to have cured this,-
1, run the thing on AVGAS and ALDON OCTANE BOOSTER if you can't
get your local airfield to sell you the stuff LARGE TESCO'S now sell
99 (better than Optimax) octane and just put more Aldon in it.
2, you will have to run it on pump fuel occaisionally, so get it set
up by Jamie at Jamsport as he seems to be the only person in the
south (OOOH CONTROVERSIAL) who cares about your car, knows whats for sitting on/leaning on a bar and does a cracking job.

Obviously joking about cr*p rolling road operators out there......
I'm sure they all have a very comprehensive knowledge
garnered from studying long and hard to gain their many
formal and recognised qualifications.

Obviously the Lithium hasn't kicked in just yet.....!

i work for a company that makes pistons, and isn't mahle. AE is not a crap make but.....

the ERST piston was originally suplied by mahle. i think they may have used a forged piston, i know ours are cast. but they should still be ok for the original application (not necessarily for a 20 psi monster tho).

on the subject of melted pistons, the max temp your piston should see if your petrol engine is correctly set up (and isn't a top fuel dragster) is about 300C, and aluminium melts at about 600 depending on the alloy.

as was pointed out earlier, these 'melted' pistons are invariably destroyed by detonation, not melting.
