Default Oil Level indicator / Gauge...

Somthing I have never quite understood about performance cars (especially RS's) is the lack of low oil level warning systems.

Having recently had alot of trouble with my car losing oil and twice the level dropped to below the min without any indication from the oil light it got me thinking, is there anything on the market you can get to monitor the oil level in the sump? I would find this espcially useful on track days as its so important to make sure the oil level in at the max.

Just a thought anyway

The S1 RST, RS1600i and other higher spec MK3 Escorts inc Ghia, XR3 and XR3i, had the additional bank of five warning lights which included a "low oil level" warning light, which was damn useful with the CVH oil burner, but these features were dropped with the MK4, bad idea tbh.

Yes Dan, it's called a dipstick!

It should never be that you should lose that much oil that you would require warning for a single journey - if you're that concerned, then check the oil before each journey.

I agree, you just need to check it everyday to be safe

I checked it before i left for Karls (was on max) checked at J14 services (12 miles was near enough max) checked again at J16 (still on max) then again at karls (just below max so topped it up)

Drove all the way home without checking as it hardly moved on the way up but when i checked when i got home it was below min!

Dont have this problem anymore as the engines sorted but would be nice to have some sort of saftey device to warn you went its on min.
