IMHO they are good reliable[ish] cars and we've bought and sold quite a few over the years

BUT you are far better to get the equivalent Seat you'll get more for your money too

Also, there was a topgear user survey a couple years ago and all the cars based on the golf [Beetle, TT, Seat, Skoda etc.] came out ABOVE it

You get the VW badge and that's it. If badge snobbery is what you're after you can't go far wrong but you will get more car for your cash by getting the Seat.

The TDi engines respond very well to being chipped

Nice golf that mate.....

GottobZetec......another alternative is a VW Bora - basically a golf but with a boot - again cheaper to buy and cheaper to insure also!!!

But as said above - handling isnt that brilliant....lowering it/different shocks will help the handling, as does fitting different ARBs.....but in the wet they can become a little.....interesting!!!

Love the wheels im looking seriously at a 1.9 GT TDI S reg, in Dark blue, love them wheels really suit it!

When you talk about the doggy handliung i take it this is understeer, and will it handle ok lowered and on new dampers etc?

And if superchipped should be about 140bhp should embarres some ppl in a diesel, I am still only 17

Had a Mk4 Golf from work and didn't think it was too bad. Nice to drive, felt solid just a bit boring. At 17 I don't think youcan go too far wrong but I would call the insurance companies to see what they say before setting your heart on one.
