how do you wire an amp??
Right i need to know if this is right and what i am missing. From the back of the head unit you run a rca lead to the amp now there is a 3rd wire that is on my rca lead what does this do? Once its in the amp you need to connect a remote wire now where does this go on the head unit? finally a ground wire this goes to ground obviously but wheres the best place for this in the boot?? Thanks

Is the extra wire actually attached to the rca lead? If it is then its probably an earth for the screening.
It wouldnt really matter if you dont connect it unless you're having real interference problems.

You can use the small wire between the RCA's as an additional ground or as the remote. Personally I do neither and don't bother with it. I run the power cable from the batteryand the remote wire up one side of the car. The RCA up the centre. Use the same guage earth cable as your power cable and attach to a good earth in the boot. I find the best is to give the amp/amps there own unique earth rather than trying to share an existing one
the third wire attatched to your RCA leads is the remote wire, on the back of your head unit their should be a wire you can hook it up to if their is no wire i spliced mine into myignition on wire on the head unit, earthing the amp should be quite simple pull up the carpets in the boot and see if you can see an earth near the rear lights, you obviously need a fused power wire running from your battery to the amp and the speaker wires to hook it up to your speakers/sub.
hope this helps

ok ignore the wire with the rca lead. Where does the remote wire go at the head unit end? If i want to run 2 amps then do i have to do it all twice or can i bridge them from the other amp?

Theres ususally a blue amp remote wire on the headunit.
Check for power when the unit is on for radio and CD incase its an electric aerial feed.
You can use that rca extra wire for this but there is a risk of introducing interference.
For multiple amps, you can just loop the remote wire to each amp as only a small current is required to trip a relay in the amp

remote turn on wire on the back of most head units are usually blue or blue with thin white stripe, if u are unsure test the wires with a multimeter, when u switch on the head unit the wire will become live and show around 12volts. i used to link the wire from on amp to the next, been a good few years since i wired an amp up tho
