Does anyone know if its possible to record the things that you 'keep' onto dvd instead of vhs?

If i had a dvd player/burner would it be possible?

make sure you connect from the "TV" scart output into the DVD recorder, and then from the DVD recorder into your telly - this way you record the RGB signal rather than the crappy composite that the VCR scart output throws out and thus will see almost exactly the same quality (pixellation and digital artefacts and all ) as you do when watching straight from the box
