Something that can open words and excel documents and work with them???

I seem to remember there being a compatible bit of kit out there...

anyone know???

OpenOffice is free, and can be downloaded from here, the only thing I've found it doesn't like so far is password-protected Excel-specific files (ie. XLS format). Works fine for everything else...
