any old 12v transformer with two crocodile clips
current not important as constant voltage will keep it topped up

Ull want to take the battery upto about 14.4v then drop off to a 13.7 float, so ull need more than a transformer!

you only need 14+volts if you are charging from flat, 12volts will keep a battery topped up enough to start it no probs,
Just strip off the end to leave two bare wires, connect the clips and check the polarity with a meter, and job done. Old phone charger, old games charger etc
Why pay 15 pounds when you have the bits.

If you are building your own how about making it so it conditions the battery too. Really useful if the car is standing because it will keep topping up the battery and discharging it to keep it healthy. I don't know the electronics behind it but it's just a thought.

Under charging the battery will cause sulphation of the plates and premature failure.

Works out cheaper to buy a charger than a battery every other year.

these are lead acid batteries, not nicads so they don't suffer from memory problems, technology has moved on somewhat from a few years ago, the only reason we use them is so the alarm has a power source, the cars get started every 2 weeks anyway so that will recondition the batteries by dropping them to around 9volts on starting and back up to 14v when running

Im in the unfortunate posistion of seeing thousands of batteries a week and trust me this is not a good idea. Battery (lead acid) technology has made fuck all progession really.
Think halfords do a three year warrenty so try on one of them if ya must
