Default Any guitarists on here?

just started to learn the acoustic just for a pass time thing. Got a dvd with etc.

Not sure if the DVD is the style i want tho...its thumbpluck finger stroke or something....

Are there any other dvds recommended to get me going? Also are there any kind of things i can do to train my fingers to move seperate? Struggling to move to the chords Or will it just get easier with time? My fingers just wont move to the strings alone, i move one finger and they all go...

when i first started to play the guitar i was tought by a ex jazz/blues player, he tought me to use scales first and that will loosen ya fingers up ect, though im not anywhere NEAR good as i aint touched my les paul since i was 18,,,,, infact the last thing i learn to play was a verve song,,,,,,,,,,, just cause it was easy

when i was in the school band all we done was play ragga though as the main person who arranged it all was fonte from heartless crew as me and him where the only ones who could play anything at school

i took a carreer change as music is a waste of life i got told by my dad,,, jermaine and antother guy ( cant remember his name ) decided to get into dj/making music,,,,,,,,,,,,, there now called heartless crew and i post on passionford

anyway try playing scales to teach ya fingers to move along and know what there doing

then learn to play "green onions "

erm,,,,,,,,,,,, there a set of notes that y play along the frets of the guitar in order, they are perfect note and ya can play em in any order and ya sound like slash doing a guitar solo,,,,,,,, ya dont need to follow notes as no mater how ya play it it sounds the tits

its soo cool, everyone at school thought i was the next eric clapton

i cant for the life of me remeber the actual notes, me guitar is at me parents house somewhere so i cant even play it to remind me

let me think for a few moments and ill tell ya what notes and just play along

its not chords though but teaches ya speed

give me 5 mins to think

im 24 and ive been playing the guitar since i was about 8 yr old i think. I,m self tought.
If you wand to play rythym guitar, where you strum chords and is great for singalongs at partys etc, the best thing to do is get a chord chart and just start with some basic chords like A,E,D,G,C. buy yourself a begginers guitar song book with simple songs. there are lots of songs you can play with these simple chords and the only way to get better is PRACTICE!!!
it wont come overnight as some people seem to think they can learn in a few weeks, they give up and then their guitar sits as an ornament in the corner of the room. its all about how devoted you are to learning as it aint easy.
Chord changes are what its all about so just keep practicing changes and you will get there eventually. dont bother with trying to learn songs for a while untill you can change more quickly. just try changing from A to E to D for a while, then try other chords and swap them about.
Scales are ok but basically anybody with a hand can play 1 string tunes on a guitar. changing chords is the best way to loosen up your fingers and like i said the only thing that makes it easier is lots of practice.
another thing is that your finger tips will get sore untill you develop callouses on them. but i suggest you go to ur nearest music shop and buy a set of acoustic 10 guage strings as these are light and will be easier to press onto fret board. the chances are the strings on your acoustic will be 12's . 10's will make it much easier for you.
i wouldnt really bother with dvd's as they never really get a good write up and they move to fast for a novice. by the end of them they are playing like slash and expect you to keep up
also buy yourself a tuner or pitch pipes and keep it in tune. that way you will learn how a chord should sound.
thats my advice so far, if you have anymore questions or are struggling with anything, just ask.
good luck
jonny

I've played the guitar for a little over 22 years now.
I'm 32 by the way.

I love the Knopfler thumb picking style, so I never play with a pick
But that is not something to start with.

Learn to use the pick and stum up and down to simple songs like
"Walk of life" on the brothers in arms album
It's in the key of E and also usees A and B cord.

So if you use these 3 cords you can become a rythme guitarist for MK
That's how I learned it.....and much later on started to do the lead stuff

Hope it helps

Lee

Takes time mate, just sit in front of the TV and change the chords, dont even have to play it to get used to moving your fingers

It'll take some time though........understatement of a decade
But it's fun and the guitar never has a headache......... or something like that
