Is the best/easiest way to go to take the head off first

with the 4x4 its actually easier to disconnect everything and lift the front end of the car & drop the engine out the bottom.
I watched Paul at north yorks' do this in about 10 mins!

Out the bottem is the best. It can be done out the top, but take it from me it is a pain in the @$$. I believe it tooke me a day just to wedge mine out (was a v6 4x4) of the top. When I put her back in I just disconnected the crossmember from the body, put the motor on it and lowered the car onto it. much easier.!!!!!

I took mine out upwards and we had no problems..
only pain in the ass was the small space behind the engine to unbolt the gearbox.
we put it in place and had it connected to the box (with 4 bolts to hold it roughly in place) in 10 mins from above...
