Default why is it

so why is it that the YB engine uses oil?
and so much of it!? 1 litre for 620 miles (according to fords guide)
for the sierra cosworth.

so what is it?
the rings letting it seap past? or is it to do with the turbo?

this is supposeing that the engine is in good condition!

it does... but look at your owners manual for sierra

says
Cosworth YB oil consumption can be 1 litre every 620 miles.

just wondering where all this oil actually goes!!
cos it dont seem that the catch tank gets very much oil in it. lol
certainly not even nearly the same amount that gets used!

yeah, ive begun to collect the parts!
im thinking i'll get the turbo done first and see if that makes any difference.

after that. i think i'll be speaking to Racetek or someone!

bit more power next time then!

that'll put the closed loop on hold for a bit

mine used to use about 1/4 litre every 200-300 miles of hard driving , fresh build and never used to smoke or leak.

dont know any owner who drives hard and dosnt use any oil TBH, nothing to worry about

is that the New one!? Or the old old one? (sorry i dont know much about BMs lol)

Been out tonight,, It seems if i roll up to a junction (on overrun)
then the car will smoke when i pull away again. or smoke a bit if
i just rev the engine (even slightly) when sat at the junction.... so i'm guessing the LARGE part
of my oil consumption problem is the turbo.(obviously not all )
so will get that re built as a start!

aint cossies great love em though

Mine smokes the same as yours, but I have had turbo and valve guides done not made any difference so I suspect oil control rings, so may have to do that soon as well, so don't hold out hope of turbo being cause.

lol.
had a look the turbo shaft has quite a bit of play in it

also, if it was piston rings on the way out, wouldnt it be chuckin a load
of oil out of the breather? into the catch tank?

just a wonder! cheers!

I will let you know if I find out what mine is, but when I did head bores looked ok no grooves, I had all new guides and seals and then I replaced turbo with recon exchange. It still uses same amount of oil, I have an uprated breather fitted and have taken all this apart and I am getting no oil in there at all. I am only guessing that my oil control rings are gone but compression rings are ok, as all are even with a compression test, but am going to get it looked at before I take it apart, but it is the only part of the engine left that has not been done so I am fairly confident, as I cannot see what else it could be. I am just passing on my expereince as I was disapointed after I followed advice I was given only to find it made no difference. Although when I took head off the guides were well worn so the job was needed.
Also turbo does have quite a lot of play side to side even when new.

dont know any cossie that dont smoke or burn oil,if you drive hard they do it on the over run just as you get back on the gas puffff comes the smoke,it does say bout the oil in the ford manual and that is based on a standard engine so if your engine is tuned its gona burn more than that.
