Default Snapped camblet Q?

Mate picked up a lovely tidy Escort TD yesterday and on the way back from Kent today it snapped its timing belt.

What are the chances of getting away with just fitting a new belt? What possible damage can/could I expect?

Don't mean to sound like a thicko but I have no experience with diesels

In advance

Probably bent a few valves etc...

Have to take the head off and check the lot of them.

I had this go on one i had, about Ł170 in a garage to put right.

that was a cheapish garage btw.

Starts with F and ends in UCKED..... quite commonly snap the cam as well as bending the valves

Bent valves most probably tbh.

I would guess the pistons will be marked, but should be useable. Just so you know, CI engines run a much tighter belt too, because of the increased compression. And dont start it up with the airfilter off. Never seen it, but heard reports that they can pull rags and other crap off worksurfaces into the engine! Greater forces!

Well I have had a fight to get the remains of the old belt out put a 19mm spanner on the bottom pulley and it wasn't too hard to turn at all.

if youve turned the bottom pulley with no cambelt on youve probably done even more damage

you will need to take head off to check valves

i've never known a ford 1.8 diesel not bend the valves when the belt has gone.

depending on speed it will snap the cam-may not be visible till you unbolt all the carriers, and can smash the buckets as well.

definetely head off mate, it is an interference engine.

the valves can also goose neck in the guides, they might look ok but become very stiff ,a second hand head would be cheaper.

once a valves bent its bent, no amount of turning will do it any further damage-apart from if you try it at cranking speed etc the oil pump isn't working with no belt on!

I've done a couple of these with snapped belts, both of which were at low speed and were repairable, ie: snapped/bent valves and guides so new heads on both. Apparently they don't often survive so was lucky in both cases.

Have to get the price of a used full head then.

Be easier to put a full head on.

non turbo heads are exactly the same as turbo so don't phone any breaker and ask for turbo head as the price will go up by Ł20.

you say he only picked it up yesterday in original post, unless hes bought it from the block i'd approach vendor wether private or trade about remuneration for repairs.

i done one on a non-turbo at 80mph, 7 bent valves was allit done, no head damage, although as said above some do snap cams or break the cam caps.
use pattern parts with a genuine belt & tensionor kit, that shouldn't be to bad.
