do you mean your own site where ppl can make purchases online?

A very easy way is to setup an ebay shop.

you dont have to be vat registered unless your sales are 60k a year

also if you want to take c/c's you will need a merchant account i.e http://www.metacharge.com/

other option is paypal, ccnow etc.

use the code from ebay to set the shop up on your own website using everything from yourself, but when they click "buy" they are taken to an ebay buy-it-now link?

just a thought

Loads of programs out there to help you do it.

Do you have the website and hosting capability yet ?

Got to get on my home PC to remember them all tho

well they can pay by cheque by as discussed.

People want things yesterday, so online payment makes things quicker.

and there's no way im going through the hassle of CC payments.

Im not selling second hand cosworth or RS turbo parts BTW

ryan - if you want to online payments you will have to be a merchant number.

You can do it the ebay way but IMO it does not look too professional but is great to get you started on the money train

yeah paypal, its already setup so it seems pointless using anything else, and most people have a paypal account if not then they can use the traditional method of a cheque.

Regards hosting, got 50mb of webspace, not much i know, but surely enough for a simple online shop?

you wont need a merchant number if using paypal i think - will have to double check for you.

With regards to hosting 50MB of web space for your site, you may get away with it but the site will have to be designed with this in mind. ie, you will not be able to loadsa flashy images and adverts.

Another thing you may want to look into is becoming an Associate affiliate with Amazon.com/.co.uk as this will earn you money too and is another form of advertising

I had one a couple of years ago, it was similar to this. You download the software, upload it to your web space and set it up from there

http://www.online-store.co.uk/

I don't think it was this one but if I find it I will post it up - this is similar though

Cheers for the Info Ran.

Is this something you would consider?, as i know you work on them all day.

Cheers Alan will have a look.

Bsically im looking to sell connector plugs, for people who want to do there own looms or small repairs. I have to buy in massive bulk for my looms, so its an oportunity for me to pass the benefits, i.e alot of the plugs i've got you cant buy in smaller quantities than 500. and when people only want 3-4 it kind of defeats the object.

Its just a though really.

It would be very similar to what VWP sell, but cheaper, and IMO better producs.

Yes.

sorry, thought you'd appreciate a short and to the point answer

Ryan, you say you don't want the hassle of CC's - that's exactly what you're going to get with a merchant account / online order taking. Remember, the buck always stops with the trader, do bear this in mind.....

Cheers Bong.

But CC incure massive charges, and are alot of hassle for a small time trader, so i kind of pressumed having a thrid party payment would take alot of the hassle out?

I know what you mean though

Ryan - yes it is something i will defo consider.

However, even with third party cc payments are you still liable tho?

The thing is although CC are lots of hassle they generate plenty of income - i know peeps who tend to only use their CC card when buying online as it covers them for any mishaps, etc.

yeah i guess i would have to way up the costs.

as i guess you could say paypal take 4% of the purchase price, and i think CC only take 2% dont they?

Would have to find out what other costs are involved etc etc

Ryan, the biggest worry with CC payments are chargebacks/fraud - either way, you are out of pocket. As Ran says though, having CC facilities does sway a certain part of your potential market Either way, the risk can be managed (preferably with a baseball bat lol).

Depending on the amount of trade some online merchant middlemen wont start feeding back the money to you until you have a reserve of say Ł1000 credited to them. That is used as a buffer for any chargebacks or fraudulent tradings.

Im using OsCommerce and thats a free shop although you have to modify it quite much to get it like you want it. So unless you are good with computers its not an option.

Check with Petrucci as im shure he can host a shop for you.

Ryan, if you're going to install software, make sure your ISP actually supports what you are about to install. Not all ISP allow for Internet Information Server extensions, databases, PHP, perl, etc... some of which you may need for this "software" to operate.

BT have a facility whereby they do this on your behalf I believe, but I am sure there is a cost associated with it - as always.

Ryan, found this which you might find useful:

Also, some software, but can't vouch for it personally

Frog, I'd go as far as to say MOST ISP offerings (with your normal connection account) don't offer IIS functionality, FP extensions at best (URGH!!!)

One & One are currently doing a 6 month trial (Linux only at present) which is free.

Get some decent hosting, don't cost much:

http://www.blazernetwork.com/

Then just buy one of the many web site shop/store front software available, customize it to your needs and put your products on it. Most of them also include the code to process credit cards thought paypal, http://www.secpay.com/ etc etc

HTH
