think they(k/n) make a solution that you're supposed to place the filter into think it's sort of oil based

LOL. The best way is with K&N Filter Cleaner and then use with K&N Oil.

Buy the cleaner in a big bottle and buy the smallest can of oil. Dont bother with the Recharge kit as you will end up using all the cleaner quickly and have lots of oil left.

BTW, once you have the cleaner, spray it on both sides of the filter. Then let is soak for a few mins, then rinse it through using normal household water pressure. Make sure you rinse the right way, from Inside to Outside with a Cone Filter and from the Clean side to the Dirty side with a Panel Filter.

You shouldn't clean them with petrol as it damages the cotton of the filter. It works but doe sthem no good long term.

Just to add to what C&B said, IIRC the element is actually white - it gets the pink colour from the oil so you can tell it's been re-oiled correctly.

If its an element i wouldnt bother cleaning it i would go and buy a new one.

I mean one in my Focus was £26 for K&N element filter, the K&N cleaner kit £15 ish ??? SO the difference is only £11 extra for a new filter, thats my opinion

A K&N Group A is about £100 so you throw it away and buy another
