Default Difference in 3 door shells that no one mentioned, tunnel!

The 3 door 1.6 GL tunnel (although still ample for the gearbox) has a narrower back end to it than the RS500 shell and the rear mounting brackets are in a different place, just thought it would mention it as no one did that i recall when i said i was using a GL donor shell and was asking for differences.

Is it just the 500 shell that varies like this, or do normal cossies ones also feature this extra room at the back?

Whats the purpose of the extra space, its FAR wider than the box, is it to allow the potential for fitment of some other transmission as well?

on the early 3 door shells (pre late 84) the rear crossmember has 6 fixed captive nuts where as the later shells have sliding bolts

didn't realise there was a width difference though, except on the 4x4 shells (which obviously weren't 3 door)

Maybe you have one that was destined for an autobox? I recall these were wider.

Yes its the slider type arrangement on this, is that what all the 500 sheels were then? (i guess so as they are all after that date), presumabley thats why it changed was it?

Porkie my reasons for this are:
The chassis number (only last oucple of bigits missing and the rest matches a 500 one)
The cut battery tray
The RS500 stickers glue could still be seen on the wings etc where they peeled them off when it was stolen
The RS500 dials
The genine RS500 front bumper etc with date still on it.

The only non 500 parts were a 200 block engine (which is obviously not original one for that shell anyway) and the rear spoiler which is a normal 3 door one but isnt the original one from the car anyway as the boot has been changed (you can tell from the wiring to the wiper etc), so if anyhing thats more evidence it wasnt a normal 3 door shell too.

Obviously you can never be 100% sure with any rs500 unless you buy it new from ford, but it does seem highly unlikely it wasnt one, every single thing anyone has been able to say about a rs500 seems to tie up with it, even the end caps on the intercooler where the 500 drivers side one points in slightly etc.

Dials are not same as normal 1.6GL or whatever, same goes for seats and door cars and door mirrors.

Thought only the 500 ones had the higher speedo on them though?

Either way though, its the chassis number thats my main "clue"

As for RS500 dials, i thought they was all the same as the 3dr, whats different

I'd have said it being an Auto shell, as the transmission tunnels im sure was bigger, did you have the engine and transmission with the 1.6 shell chip ??

No mate, 3dr/RS500 ones differ from Saff Cossie ones as they have a boost gauge and Saffs dont, but barring that they exactly the same.

Surely that should be the only clue chip, everything else can be transplanted. I know someone who's putting cossie running gear in a 1.6 GL shell, can't remember who though

Ah fair enough, i thought the normal 3 door ones were like the saph ones but iwth a boost gauge, i stand corrected, im not really a ford bufty as you know so all these little details are of little interest to me.

Anyway, suffice to say the only bits that arent rs500 spec are the bits that have been visible changed, the boot spoiler which appeared to have been repainted (over spray on the black bit) and the engine which was NOT factory fit, partly cause it was 200 and partly cause it was wired by Stevie Wonder.

there is different mounting plates for the rear trailering arms

spot welded on after they where made so the touirng car rs500 could run different mounting position as per the rules for racing,

you will not find these small plates on the three door cosworths as it was done by tickford on all rs500 cars before they where delivered.

Dan, yeah it will fit, although you may have to source a differetn gearbox mount to the one that comes with it.

i always thought the 3dr's were EXACTLY the same as the 500's apart from the engine, body kit, and the trailing arm brackets. dont think anything else was different as tickford just pulled normal 3dr's off the production line, removed all the standard bits and fitted 500 bits, including the welded plates.....
