Hi all,
Why is it that the F Reg Escorts don't seem to rust as much as the other years. I have an Escort Cabbie and it has never needed any welding round the floors etc but when I look at the newer RST's they need a bit. Did Ford get the bodywork etc from another source for this year.
Cheers

The Cabbie's were built by Karman, all the ones i have seen has never had any rust on them, unless damaged of course, im thinking there was something different about the metal on these, as a lot people i know has noticed this too.

Ha ha I was told a totally different story! I was told the Dreg was german metal, and strong as fuck, then the made the EFGs with the spanish metal which was shit, they realised this and went back to the German for the H plate. Not saying thats the truth but just one side of the story. Cant be true though cause My E reg is completely spotless rustwise!

Another question. I've noticed that water sits in the battery tray area on my car after I have washed it which I don't like the idea of. Has anyone thought about putting a rubber strip along the back edge of the bonnet to stop the water getting in?

Ive found both my G regers to be nice and clean, my h plate was a snotter
I 'heard' on one year the metal was left outside and went shite, as above probs bs! anyway, I believe that its still metal and will still lrust whatever the year, imo its how its been looked after throughout its life which depends on overall condtion!

as where my g plate is like swiss cheese, floor non existent
think fred flinstone was the last owner
my mates have got a h plate which is in need of some work and other mates got a f plate which is mint(belonged to rs_si)
think it just depends on whether the previous owners have looked after them or not

Its a touchy subject but im sitting here away to blow a fuse with him, he can do what he wants to hurt me but NOT my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i had a h-plate and it was relly mint until it got a sold to a friend, who just abused it.then the whole car just turned into a ball of rust,i think its gone to heaven now tho, apparantley the bulkheads are reknown for going on h-plates,my f-plate has a little rust which needs weling where thr front bumper mounts on to which is in the process!!

The only logical answer seems to be the battery tray - but then looking at it I cant see how anything could pass through there its not really rusty at all, just a few discoulourments here and there but nothing to the extent where water could dribble down the way it does. Something has to be done though, as I dont want to the floor to rot or the car to need serious weilding.
Wet passenger carpet?Sorry but 95% of the time it's due to the battery tray is rotten.
Remove the battery and stick some sealer down along the bulkhead for a temporary fix.Once the battery is out the problem will become quite obvious

for real, the battery tray, the screw that holds the battery clamp on has possibly penetrated the metal the tray sits on,check my thread, all will be clear ,trust me,the other thing ,the water runs down your bonnet edge ,hits your bonnet rubber then runs down your strut housing onto your bat tray, remove the rubber and cut a channel where it sits against the wing cill,(out of the rubber with a sharp knife),like a little diamond of rubber, removed to promote the water flow, replace the rubber, and next time it lashes down ,less water will flow onto your bat tray,or fuse box(other side),juss remember to keep the hole clear of debris!
my car was constantly wet,not any more!

easiest thing to do is take your dashboard out,i know but its not as hard as you think, just a case of locating all the bolts
then you wont miss where its comin in and just either get it welded up or seal it up if its not too bad
just mind how you took it out so you can put it back in same way

Julia, this is almost definatley the battery tray, but i wouldn't be to concerned it's not a big job and done properley it will look like new
I'd get it done sooner rather than later though the floors on these cars rust like f*** as soon as they see any moisture
Shame your not closer cos i could of done it for yer
Ant.

As above, firstly, u will likely find a hole if u look under the dash i'd agree with everyone else thats what the prob is, and yes, get it sorted asap as the water will be soaked into the carpets and the soundproofing underneth making things even worse!
And using an electrical appliance to suck water up? what are you thinking

i know arrund 85-86 (mainly early mk4s ) suffered badly, a fridn of mine had a c reg pop plus mk4 and i have never ever seen a car rust so bad, i dont know what was holding it together, cabs are generally good and i think the box section underneath makes a difference, as the floor dont seem to rust!
