Iv recently changed the engine on my 4x4 cossie, when i pulled the front shafts out there was springs in the cups, what are these for and are they important????

the spring inside the cup acts as a damper when you go from lock to lock yoput shaft moves inside the cup hence the spring to return it to its origonal position,
this is the problem with lowered cars the shaft moves further out and on a lock comes out of the cup and bang one big expensive mess
