Welcome

They have already said exactly what i would do!
Not worth spending any cash on really, save what ever you are tempted to do to it and put it towards something better once you get the all important NCB.
You will be VERY gald that you did

why not buy a rs or xr2i kit of ebay etc nice wheels etc, smoke around for a yr get some no claims and get used to driving before wanting a powerful car,
good luck with passing your test also

Welcome

i was in this position about a year ago and all I wanted was a faster car (I had a 1.3 escort), but I';ve come to terms with the fact that I'm gonna have to wait to get an RS but that'll just make it all the better when I do get one

As said above its not the best idea to get a powerful car to start of with untill you know your own driving style and get a bit of experiance, because when I've had a few mishaps where if I'd been travelling faster (in a faster car) I would have proberly crashed, so its not all that bad lol

I had a fiesta and what i did was but things that can go on any car till i got a better car, i got some alloys and headunit... springs and stuff like that... nothing to make it go faster but stuff that can be transfered on to another car...
