Default Anyone got a Mondeo ST24?

Thinking of chopping the granny in for a Mondeo ST24.

Wondered if anyone thats got one thinks of em? I know they are big engines (and expensive to fix!) but what they like on fuel?

I've driven one for the last 6 months. Great cars

They handle pretty well for such a big bus IMO, got all the toys, and the engine is a peach

A couple of things to watch out for:

- Water pump failure. The impellor is plastic and breaks down over time. This will cause head gasket failure at best, and potentially destroy the engine totally Metal replacements are available and on the cards for me

- Secondary throttles. These are controlled by a motor on the MKii's. This can stick, and the car will feel as flat as a fart if this is the case. Nail it in 2nd, and you will feel it liven up at about 3500rpm if all is good

Any more questions, shoot

Neil.

Cheers Neil,

my misses has a Mk1 mondeo ghia with the 24V lump, think they are similar engines if not the same?

I just find the granny does about 27mpg and as much as I love it its just too juicy for the miles I do.

I had a '98 2.5 ghia about 4-5 years ago and it was a great little car. Fuel wise it use to get mid 30's mpg but if you floored the loud pedal you'd be into low to mid 20's.

Nice cars to drive ......

Im getting about 340 miles to a tank, so about 24mpg.

The engines are similar. The MK1's had vacum controlled secondaries I think.

For long journeys, I find mine is nice Quiet and comfortable

I dont think they are that hard. They are on the otherside to the timing chain and are driven by a thin belt.

I've had one for the last six months and for the first time of owning cars the bonnets only been up to check the levels and the secondary throttle thing.

Great reliable motors, I've been inpressed. There quick enough when you need it, wicked cruisers, all the toys, half leather and sound nice with a filter on.

There ok on fuel if you dont boot it, cus its thirsty if you do.

The only trouble is, I'm bored and need summat turboed again, their a lovely drive but jus not the same when your used to a kick in the kidneys from a turbs.

Mine might be in the for sale section soon.

I have a mk1 V6 ghia X so it's basicly the same, very nice car, as said change the water pump for a metal impeller one, 8 bolts to remove, you don't have to remove the whole pump just the impellor housing, did mine in feb in the dark in half an hour!

Its called Moosing & its down to the rubber hose that joins the Inlet to the airbox from memory. Ford sell a revised one that stops the noise.
