Default Passive rear steering - discuss

Ok, a few cars out there have passive rear steering to help with cornering (some active too), it seems a good idea at first, but I was wondering why more cars aren't fitted with it.

If it's any good, would it be technically feasible to build a rear beam/subframe that would work like that for a cossie/rst ?

My Mitsubishi has 2 steering racks - one for the front and 1 for the rear.

It is fantastic round corners and stable at speed

I think that any "home made" system is going to be difficult to get working 100% ALL the time. You'll need loads of extra sensors for steering input, vehicle speed, throttle position, yaw rate etc etc Mucho headaches!

A Passive system where the various parts twist torsionally would probably be a safer bet. On a permanently RWD car, I can't imagine theres a need. A better suspension geo will do 90% of what you're hoping to achieve. A better turn in, and a more stable rear when accelerating out of a corner. Something Im led to believe Cossies arent very good at.

On a FWD car something like a RST will need a complete assembly. Maybe retro fitting a Pug 306 trailing arm will do the job?

Good thread btw. Far too many on here are about straight lines

Thanks Rich w

I don't think a retrofit active system would be possible unless the car was built with it, unless you have loads of money to throw at the problem/solution.

Assuming you have the 90% you are trying to achieve already through better suspension geometry, would the extra 10% be worth it ?

Anyone from Zoo reading this ?

These appear to be front wheel drive mainly. Does independent mean no anti roll bar anymore ?

Sorry, don't know much about suspension setups
