Default Overheating problem (not on the cossie) help.

Bit of advise please, my volvo 850R started running very hot yesterday (it was very hot here), was running at 3/4 of temp gauge & when you used kickdown or went up a steep hill the temp was climbing even more, until i had to do the whole 40 mile journey home with the heaters on full to keep the temp at just over half on the gauge as it was nudging the red at one point without the heater on . Went out this morning & check the expansion tank which is still at the max & has no crap in it. Checked the oil,all clean, checked for leaks ,none. Ran it up the road for 4 miles or so & noticed it gets to engine operating temp very quickly. Checked it when i got home after doing about 4 miles (was running just over half way on gauge but the weather is a bit cooler this morning) & found that the top hose that runs from the thermostat to rad is red hot but the bottom hose from rad to block is cold after 4 miles , i take it the rad is blocked ? Just hope it hasn't done the headgasket in the process. How do rads block up ?

This means the wife might have to use the cossie & i might have to drive it in the wet , Going off to Lydden race circuit in the cossie this morning
