Mk1 Escort - front suspension / strut query

Hi, n00b alert
I've got a Jago Jeep kit car based on a Mk1 escort which I acquired recently. The documents are a little vague - it appears that the kit was built from Mk1 parts, but was later fitted with a 2-litre OHC.
I'm having some trouble with the front OS strut - it wobbles in the tube. Although it passed the MOT, I guess it needs replacing, as the front-end dives terribly under braking. This is disconcerting, to say the least, especially as someone has retrofitted a servo which makes the brakes lock far too easily (IMO).
I understand there were two types of strut on Mk1 escorts - one having a narrower stanchion than the other. My strut top bolt is 12mm diameter - I'm not sure if that makes it an early or late model? Is this the bigger, or smaller of the variants?
Are there good aftermarket direct replacement struts that would firm up my front-end, and will I need to change the strut top bushes for wider/narrower ones?
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks in advance,
Ax
