3 weeks ago, clean bill of health and 196 Bhp at 19psi, which I thought a bit optimistic.
Dubious but told give it a Good run. Going really nice at low boost without going Mental,
press the Green button for full boost, Lunatic for 10 seconds then Bang!
Barely got it home. One rocker arm rattling about, nut backed off? All done to same torque
and all the others fine,
Bit suspect about the follower and given the last Piper cam kit was a Bag o sh-t,
is it worth me trying a new follower before tearing the head off to see what else might be
knackered? Lobe on cam looks OK but follower struggles to compress in a Vice.
Have a newly rebuilt engine, have to resort to installing this, will be very Glad to see the back of this pile of crap.
As an aside, Gaz Gold dampers, just weld in metal bars, same effect, no feckin suspension!
Never even all my years of CVH ownership have I had a nut back off. Stud pull out the head, yes, but nut, nah. And I've had N/A CVHs doing ~8k rpm on the regular.
If they used the proper nut, its essentially self locking - forgotten the proper name for them but they are slightly oval'd (can see it in the right hand nut)
Hydraulic cams work harden with the rockers, so switching it for new is a complete gamble. Worst case the cam or new rocker start breaking up then you end up with an engine full of metal swarf.
I'd be asking whoever built it to be providing a new cam and lifters if it were me
Installed the replacement myself as the ' Tuners' told me it was just noise till the tappets filled up. Done properly with lube and 2000 revs for how long . can't mind.Stripped it today and one cam follower barely compresses in a vice. Piper weren't interested in taking responsibility 10 years ago for the first pile of crap so no point in arguing with them now after another piece of crap. So paying for two cam kits later which were both a pile of pish, no Faith now in leaving it in the car. Can't remember how many CVH heads I have done but a self locking nut, torqued properly doesn't back of for no reason. Took a hardened follower from another head and it runs but how long before another piece of Piper crap gives up the Ghost?
Well. used follower from the Burton head soaked in oil for a while, car starts and run, lucky me. Compression test next. One tappet knackers and your f--ked?
First RS , no problems, current one? So what's the script. one follower goosed, whole new kit, used one hardened to it's lobe. knackers another lobe?
9psi fun, 19psi mental for about 30 seconds. Will see what Sitech advise manyana. 2005 Honda rust bucket passed it's mot surprisingly, Heriot Watt sports centre to Fife in
45 minutes as opposed to getting towed Home!
Now looking for 2 used but still good hardened followers. Seem to have got away with it as car is starting and running.
Compression test next and if ok, lets try 19psi again as Simon said it all looked good on the rollers at 19psi/196bhp.
He also said any cam kits after about 2002 were a pile of pish made from scrap metal. Newman/solid lifters, wares out,
anything else barely lasts two years. He's going roller rockers on his ultimate CVH build. I'm debating ripping it to bits
and putting a Honda engine into it,lol.
