Default burnt out ecu 2wd saff

the ecu has burnt out on my 2wd saff its an 1988 red top its all but standered its a stage one. ive just fitted a new altinator. and started the car to check the altinator output which was 14.4 v . i went to the loo leaving it running come back to a burning smell from the ecu the engine had stalled the battery hadn't taken on any charge. can altinators do this; this happened to another ecu two years ago i blamed my self for that one i thought i wired the fuel pump relay wrong. i read somwhere that if you carry out any welding its best to remove the ecu altogether i done some welding but didnt remove i took both terminals of the battery and put my anti serg device across the battery also this what ive always done when in the motortrade any help would be great thanks inadvanced. looking on line at some old posts ecu pin one and pin nineteen loose there earth or partly and could be the cause. does this sound familiar thanks
