Default Customs charges for expats

A warning to those Ford owners who live outside the UK. I've just ordered some oils, filters, and antifreeze from Opie Oils, and the courier tells me that I'm now liable for a 55€ import charge before they will deliver! In future, I'll find a French supplier . . .

And no, in case you suggest that I've got my come uppance, I didn't vote for Brexit!

Hopefully more folk here will buy nationally rather than internationally as well.

As highlighted on a recent thread on P.F, the U.K supplier should have deducted the U.K VAT as it's now a sale for export.
That supplier could, if set up for it, have dealt with the VAT due in the O.Ps country thus avoiding any collection charges there.

The O.P needs to check the paperwork with the items, it may be that VAT has been sorted out and it's the receiving Customs unit that's got it wrong in trying to charge.

Thanks for explaining this so clearly. As I haven't had the goods yet, I don't have the paperwork; but on the copy of the order, VAT is given as 0%. There's no mention of import duties.

Although I don't know how they calculate import duties, 55€ on an order valued at £129 seems a bit excessive!

Some of the 55 Euro will be a charge for collecting the VAT, but you should get a receipt showing how much.
I paid quite a lot of that from the U.S untill they brought in prepayment at the supplier for Duty and VAT for a lot of suppliers.

You should not have been charged VAT at the point of sale, but now you will have to pay VAT in your home country ( or where it arrives to )

They should give you a breakdown of all costs, but in general governments are robbing cunts, couriers are robbing cunts, and sometimes literally pluck numbers from thin air and force you to pay it ( eg, FedEx and UPS are deadly for that )
