What are the fault codes?
What exactly do you mean by: "After ignition off and back on it resets itself?"
If you mean the limp mode then that's normal and how they have designed it.
If you mean the amber light (Officially called MIL, also called engine check light) than that's unfortunately how they made it, but officially it's illegal under the EOBD rules.
The amber light should remain on for at least 3 engine starts.
If the amber light goes out on the first restart then it's possible that the fault codes are also erased (again illegal under EOBD rules).
If that is the case then the fault codes need to be read with the amber light still on.

Quite possbily the EGR valve is sticking.
I had a company owned 2010 T.D V.W Transporter that would go to Limp with the engine management light on and reset with ignition off / on.
No codes stored.
It was B.T.Fleet maintained, it went in to the workshops several times, they couldn't get it to go to Limp but thought it would be EGR.
They suggested next time it happened to drive back to them without switching the engine off, which I did.
They plugged the scanner in and it showed the code for EGR fault.
Switched off /on and the code had disappeared.
New EGR fixed it.
As above post, the codes need reading while it's faulty and running.
