Default Cosworth cylinder liners

Hi!

So, there are different types of liners / sleeves available. What would be to prefer and why? What are the differences and options available? I see different kinds like Darton, Nicasil, ductile iron (what brand are these?), wet, dry etc. Cooper rings yes or no?

The terms are used together, you can line or sleeve, its the same process. There are differences though in the design of them. Some are joined as sets (wet liners often are but not always)There are top hat types, often used in diesel systems (used to be preferred as the top hat was supposed to stop movement - didn't always work, they would crack the hats off).

Nicasil is a brand coating, has to be used with specific piston rings to allow seal, very similar to 2 stroke bore coating.
Ductile is a process not a brand, the process is how the liner/sleeve is made. The iron content is spun to remove impurities within the casting therefore making them stronger and less likely to fail.
If you want to talk sleeves/liners ring Westwood engineering. They make 99% of the liners out there these days.

They are not as expensive as people think, fitting them correctly on the other hand makes the success.

We sleeve a fair bit at work. It’s an easy block repair when the bore it damaged. Company comes out bored in situ then pushes in the repair sleeve Then bored to suit the new piston. Quick easy and makes the block re usable.

Yes, I have used liners for year in service repairs. For the heavies, insitu bore and re-sleeve has been going on since trucks were invented.
There are some limitations like where side load thrust can affect the liner position if its a parallel liner but, there are always ways and means.

For older stuff where block core consistency is shall we say 'unknown' then I always use liners. Just total confidence that what I have in that bore is a know quality to me.

We work within daf and Cummins guidelines. Euro6 engines with out wet liners are chuck away they can’t be sleeved as the bore walls are too thin
